Ronny Mauricio, SS, Bats Both, Throws Right, DOB 4/4/2001, 6'3", San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Signed by the New York Mets for $2.1 million as an International free agent on July 2, 2017.
Be it in Binghamton, the Dominican or Spring Training - Ronny continues to mash.

Through 13 games this Spring, Ronnie had 4 HRs, 8 RBIs, and a .304 Batting Average.

MLB.com: Mets prospect Mauricio earns LIDOM MVP honors. "The 21-year-old racked up 15 doubles, 31 RBIs and 54 hits with a .468 slugging percentage -- the best marks in the league -- while smacking five homers (second in the league), posting an .803 OPS (second), scoring 26 runs (second), compiling a .287 batting average (third) and swiping 10 bags (third) in 47 regular season games."

Ronny did this despite being 6.8 years younger than the average player in the league.

In 2022 at AA Binghamton he hit 26 HRs, 89 RBIs, .259/.296/.472 - .767 OPS.  Again, Ronny was one of the youngest payers in the league, almost 3 years younger than the league average. The 89 RBIs led all Mets Minor League players.

Ronny has a strong arm and can make the key play for a shortstop - go into the hole and throw a good runner out at first.

At 19, before he turned 20 in April 2021, Ronnie was invited to Spring Training with the Mets.  As one of the youngest players in camp he hit .357 in 9 games (5 for 14).

At 20 years old in 2021, he was also one of the youngest players in High-A (3.9 years lower than the league average) and Double-A (2.9 years lower than the league average).

The Mets added him to the 40 Man Roster on November 19, 2021 to keep him out of the Rule 5 Draft.

In all three 2021 levels Ronnie excelled.

In Brooklyn, he was named High-A prospect of the year, 100 games, .242/.290/.449 - .739 OPS, 19 HRs, 63 RBIs.

In his brief 8 game stint in Double-A in 2021, Ronnie showed that belonged - .323/.364/.452 - .815 OPS, 1 HR, 1 RBI.

He followed up with a stint as the starting Shortstop in the Dominican Winter League for the Tigres Del Licy (see Stats below).

Sitting right next to the Atlantic Ocean on Coney Island, Brooklyn can be a very tough place to hit, especially for left hand hitters.  In a interview last year with Mack's Mets, Brooklyn Cyclone announcer Keith Raad noted that Mauricio "because he’s a switch hitter...he would hit left a million times and the wind is blowing in.  So you hit the ball as hard as you want, it’s not going to go anywhere.."

Ed Blankmeyer: Ronny is a special talent – tremendous upside – he’s become a special defensive player – sometimes he tried to do too much.  Offensively – great upside with the bat – like everyone else he has to learn the strike zone – as a switch hitter – that might take longer.  But very, very, special player.

JFA: You talked about his defense and sometimes he tried to do too much – do you see him staying at Shortstop?

Ed Blankmeyer: Yes I do.  He’s a shortstop.  His range is very good.  His arm is a plus.  Very good hands. The way you evaluate a shortstop – can he go in the hole and throw someone out – the answer is clearly yes – the world is his oyster –

Danny Abriano SNY.TV: Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio still has lots of upside despite being overshadowed. "One of the main issues with Mauricio has been his plate discipline...His career OBP in the minors is just .300, and even as he had a strong season in 2022 for Double-A Binghamton -- hitting .259 with a .472 slugging percentage while smacking 26 homers and 26 doubles in 123 games -- he got on base at only a .296 clip."

SNY.TV: Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio talks learning from Francisco Lindor, willingness to move from shortstop. "Mauricio -- who hasn't yet played other positions professionally -- would be open to moving to third base or second base."

When you see Ronny play a minor league game, the first thing you notice is that at 6'3", he seems tall for a shortstop.  By comparison, slick fielding shortstops Francisco Lindor and Ozzie Smith are 5'11", and Omar Vizquel and Rey Ordonez are 5'9".  However Alex Rodriguez handled SS well at 6'3" as did Ernie Banks at 6'1".

He has all the tools - speed and a great arm to be a good shortstop.  However, with Lindor signed for the next nine years, a move to the outfield may be necessary to keep him on the Mets.  With his arm and speed and power from both side, he could be a good one.   I hope the Mets end up keeping him and give him a chance to play in the Majors.

Baseball Savant Spray Chart:

Mets.com has Ronnie ranked as the #6 Mets Prospect. "Mauricio looms large in the box at 6-foot-3 and can make loud impact upon contact from an open stance, especially when hitting from the left side, where he has better slugging numbers. It’s that contact part that’s been a major issue. Mauricio can get aggressive and expand the strike zone with his massive cuts, particularly against spin..."

Back in April 2021, Fangraphs had him as the Mets #2 Prospect.  They noted "Even if he only ends up with an average hit/power combination, that’s a really valuable everyday shortstop."

While Ronny is no longer listed on MLB's Top 100 Prospects, he was #75 at the start of the 2021 season: Mets.com: The Top 100 prospects for '21, team by team.
