The Mets yesterday announced that Matt Allan underwent UCL revision surgery in January.
Anthony DiComo Mets.com: "The operation is in effect a second Tommy John procedure with a similar recovery timetable. That means Allan will miss all of the 2023 season, and perhaps some of 2024 as well. Tommy John operations typically require a 12- to 18-month recovery."
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets pitching prospect Matt Allan had second Tommy John surgery. "Still just 21 years old, Allan’s complicated elbow history just got way more so. Ulnar collateral ligament revision surgery, as it is officially called, comes with a lower success rate and usually means shorter careers. If he follows a normal rehabilitation timeline this time, Allan will be approaching five years between professional games by the time he makes it back."
SNY.TV: Allan was considered one of the best high school pitchers in the 2019 draft and agreed to a $2.5 million signing bonus with the Mets instead of attending the University of Florida.
Tim Healey Newsday An early look at the Mets' 26-man roster. "There do not appear to be a whole lot of jobs to be won...the Mets’ Opening Day roster looks mostly straightforward." Tim goes on to predict that Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez will start the season at AAA. He has Tommy Pham and Darin Ruf on the bench and an 8 man bullpen that includes "RH Stephen Nogosek, RH Zach Greene, LH Joey Lucchesi"
Mike Puma NY Sports+: How the Mets hope Omar Narvaez fits their catcher rotation that has one major variable. Mike quotes Buck Showalter saying 'There’s a way to carry Alvarez on the club with the other two guys and there’s a way for him to go down below'...regarding Narvaez' offensive struggles last year Buck said 'A lot of his offense we think is going to benefit with the non-shift..I think some of the balls that he puts in play have a chance to be hits now.'
Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets’ pitching moves part of MLB player competitions to watch in 2023. "Out the door from the Mets’ rotation went Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker and Chris Bassitt, at a total cost of $320 million, and in walked Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana for $187.7 million...I will be watching all season how Verlander, Senga and Quintana perform compared to deGrom, Walker and Bassitt."
FWIW per fangraphs among catchers in 2022 Nido and Narvaez were 25th & 26th in total WAR, 7th and 13th specifically in defensive WAR.

Soto liked the post. He will be a free agent following the 2024 season.

Two years ago today, the Mets lost out on Trevor Bauer. Many were upset at the time but it turned out to be a good thing. Here were some of the stores from that day -
Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: Sources told the Daily News the Mets made Bauer an offer for over $100 million across three years with an opt out after 2021, which would have put them well over the $210 million luxury tax threshold. Bauer’s three-year deal with the Dodgers is for $102 million guaranteed, with $40 million in 2021 and $45 million in 2022, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. He can opt out after each year.
Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets losing Trevor Bauer shows just how wide gap with Dodgers is. "This offseason, they didn’t offer as much as a New York team and still landed the 2020 NL Cy Young award winner."
John Harper SNY.TV: Scouts and execs weigh in on what Trevor Bauer's decision means for Mets in NL landscape. "Mets have had a good offseason, but adding Bauer would have made it great. That’s why, to me, George Springer mattered even more, because if the Mets weren’t going to have the best starting rotation, there were other ways to win, and getting an All-Star center fielder with a proven ability to hit elite pitching in the postseason was at the top of the list."
Three yeargs ago today - 2/5/2020, the Mookie Betts to the Dodgers trade finally happened, Wilmer Flores had a new team...and The NY Post said: “Steve Cohen’s $2.6 billion bid to buy the Mets is on life support — if alive at all”.
