St. Lucie win streak ends at 3 games
ST. LUCIE METS PRESS RELEASE: JUPITER, Fla. (April 15, 2023) – The Jupiter Hammerheads scored twice late to beat the St. Lucie Mets 5-3 on Saturday evening at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium (Box Score).
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Torin Montgomery ripped a RBI triple to straightaway center field off Mets reliever Christopher Vasquez to bring home Cameron Barstad for the go-ahead run. Brett Roberts followed with a single to plate Montgomery for a 5-3 Jupiter lead.
Carlos Dominguez worked a leadoff walk in the ninth but Jupiter's Evan Taylor induced a ground ball double play off the bat of Junior Tilien to squash the hope of a rally. Jose Peroza lined out to end the game.
The Mets were stifled for most of the game by 19-year-old Jupiter starter Jacob Miller. Miller, the Marlins second round pick last year, dazzled over six no-hit innings. Miller did not walk a batter and struck out eight. The only Met to reach base against Miller was Peroza, who made it on when Roberts and Javier Sanoja collided on a fly ball in the outfield for an error.
Meanwhile, the Hammerheads built a 3-0 lead. Sanoja belted a RBI double in the first inning against Mets starter Felipe De La Cruz. Sanoja was at it again in the fifth when he laced two-out RBI single off Miguel Alfonseca to make it 2-0. Jorge Caballero then hit a run-scoring single to put the Hammerheads up 3-0.
The Mets offense went to work immediately after Miller left the game. They scored three runs off reliever Cole Kirschsieper in the seventh inning to tie the game 3-3. Tilien broke up the no hitter with a one-out double. Peroza hit a single up the middle to plate Tilien for the Mets first run. Jefrey De Los Santos brought home Peroza with a single to cut the deficit to 3-2. A two-out error on a ground ball to shortstop Harrison Spohn allowed De Los Santos to scamper home for the tying run.
Tilien, Peroza and De Los Santos recorded the only three hits for the Mets.
Sanoja went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI, a run and a stolen base for Jupiter.
De La Cruz was charged with two runs on four hits over 4.1 innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Vasquez took the loss after giving up two runs in 2.2 innings.
Kirschsieper got the win despite suffering a blown save.
The Mets (3-5) and Hammerheads (4-4) meet for their series finale at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Sunday at noon. The Mets seek the series victory.
