St. Lucie Walk-off 5-28-2023

St. Lucie wins 3-2 to pick up 5th win in last 7 games

ST. LUCIE METS PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 28, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets earned their first walk-off win of the season on Sunday at Clover Park with a 3-2 victory in 10 innings over the Clearwater Threshers (Box Score).

Kevin Villavicencio hit a sac fly to center field with one out in the 10th inning to bring home Jacob Reimer from third base for the winning run. Reimer started the inning as the leadoff batter and was plunked by Jack Dallas. Wilfredo Lara then reached on an infield single to load the bases. After Eduardo Salazar grounded into a force out at home, Villavicencio played hero by hitting a fly too deep for outfielder Justin Crawford to make a play.

In the top of the 10th, lefty reliever Eli Ankeney recorded a shallow pop out and two ground outs to strand the Threshers’ free runner at third base.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Reimer that plated Junior Tilien. Tilien previously reached base on his team-leading 10th double of the season.

The Threshers briefly went in front in the seventh inning. Gabriel Rincones, Jr. and Jordan Viars hit consecutive doubles to start the inning off Jawilme Ramirez to tie the game 1-1. Christopher Vasquez came out of the bullpen and was greeted with a RBI single from Jordan Dissin that put the Threshers up 2-1.

The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. They loaded the bases and Reimer lofted a sac fly to make it 2-2.

New York Mets pitcher Elieser Hernandez made a MLB rehab start. He pitched just the first inning as scheduled and struck out the side.

Ramirez took over from there and was excellent. He fired 5.0 innings and allowed just two runs on four hits.

Vasquez pitched 3.0 scoreless innings. It was his third straight scoreless appearance.

Ankeney was credited with the win after his scoreless 10th inning.

The Mets won the final three games of the series vs. the Threshers, who came to town with the best record in MiLB and improved that record by winning the first two games of the series.

It was the first series victory of the year for St. Lucie. The Mets have won five of their last seven games and finished their season-long home stand 5-6.

The Mets (13-31) are off on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday when they start a six-game road series at the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels. First pitch from Hammond Stadium on Tuesday is set for 7 p.m.
