Game Recap: Rumble Ponies Drop Close Saturday Contest to SeaWolves

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (6-13, 41-47) dropped a close contest to the Erie SeaWolves 3-1 on Saturday night at Mirabito Stadium. Erie leads the series 3-2.

The Ponies scored two batters into the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Wyatt Young led off the frame with an infield single and Rowdey Jordan followed with an RBI double off the right field wall.

Erie (12-7, 49-38) put up a three-spot in the third inning to take the lead. Julio Rodriguez led off the frame with his team-leading 11th home run of the season. Later in the inning, Trei Cruz singled and Justice Bigbie followed with a go-ahead two-run home run that gave Erie a 3-1 lead.

Both pitching staffs were dominant, as the score would hold from the middle of the third inning. David Griffin, Matt Minnick, and Trey McLoughlin combined to retire 17-straight Erie batters after Bigbie's homer.

Minnick tossed a season-high three perfect frames with two strikeouts in relief and McLoughlin tossed two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Dedniel Núñez pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts. Binghamton did not allow a baserunner from the third inning to the ninth inning.

Minnick, McLoughlin, and Núñez combined to throw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and one hit allowed.

The Rumble Ponies will conclude their nine-game homestand and their series against the SeaWolves on Sunday afternoon at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:05 PM.

Postgame Notes: Joe Suozzi played in his first game since June 23 at Akron…Jose Mena doubled to extend his hitting streak to a season-high four games…Branden Fryman walked to extend his on-base streak to five games.
