Mets News and Breakfast Links - 12/6/2019

Mets make a trade for a defensive Center Fielder, sign some minor league free agents, more buzz about the sale of the team to Steve Cohen, and we have Mets Minor Leaguers in Winter Ball action.

Plus the Winter Meetings will start this Sunday with the results from the Modern Era Hall Of Fame Veterans Committee voting. Yahoo Sports thinks the hall could have a Harold Baines problem. Saying since he got in who else will get in?  Unfortunately, Keith and Rusty won’t be included.

The NY Post also had the Busts, Managers, and Exits that ruined the Mets Wilpon era. “There are too many to count…Few blunders are more infamous than one of the Wilpons’ first big moves in 2004, when the Mets traded prized prospect Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, whose injury issues were overlooked and limited him to three games during the postseason push he was acquired to spark. Kazmir became a three-time All-Star and helped Tampa reach the 2008 World Series.”

I missed this on Zack Wheeler the other day from one of the best bloggers in the business (next to Mack of course), Mestradamus.  He pointed to the Sunday night game against the Dodgers and the strikeout of Cody Bellinger late in the game with men on base to illustrate Zack’s growth into the pitcher the Mets traded Carlos Beltran for in 2011.

The NY Post reported how Joe Girardi liked Zack Wheeler.  ““He’s a guy that’s going to give you 32 starts and give you over 200 innings and be really successful.”

As Metsmerized noted: “Marisnick, 28, is known for his defense in center with five defensive runs saved and eight outs above average there in 733 innings last season. The right-handed hitter slashed .233/.289/.411 with 16 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, and 10 stolen bases in 318 plate appearances in 2019. He also struck out 95 times.  He will be a free agent after the 2020 season and is expected to make $3 million through arbitration for his final season of control.”

Elite Sports NY thinks “From a value standpoint, this trade is about equal. The Astros get a reliever and a lottery ticket, and he Mets get an elite defensive CFer on a one-year $3 million contract.”

In my opinion, as thin as the Mets farm system is, the last thing I would give up are things the Mets need: Outfielders and Bullpen arms for a low cost, one year rental. But I have always hated giving up propects.  Hated giving up Herm Winningham, Floyd Youmans, and Lastings Milledge, so we will see.

With that in mind, SNY.TV had how the Mets signed two minor league free agents, Outfielder Jarrett Parker and infielder Max Moroff.  “Parker, 30, has played in parts of four major league seasons with the Angels and Giants, hitting.249/.330/.441 with 15 homers in 140 games. He spent the majority of the 2019 season in Triple-A, where he hit.266/.394/.535 with 24 homers in 96 games. Moroff, 26, played in 104 career games over four seasons with the Pirates and Indians, while getting time at second base, third base, and shortstop. He has hit .251/.358/.382 with 73 stolen bases in 703 minor league games.”

In the Dominican Republic last night, Daniel Zamora pitched 2/3rd of an inning. In a 5-4 Toros win.

Coming on in the bottom of the 6th with the Toros up 5-3, Daniel struck out the first batter he faced, a left handed hitter, then gave up two singles to right handed batters, struck out another left handed batter before being removed for another pitcher.

For the winter so far, Danial Zamora has appeared in 6 games for 3.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 un-earned run, 2 walks, 5 Ks, 0.00 ERA.

Jordany Valdespin continues to rake for Toros Del Este going 2 for 4, and is hitting .344 to lead the Dominican League in Batting Average this winter with 4 home runs, 19 RBIs.

Another Toros player, Peter O’Brien, who caught David Wright’s pop up in his final at bat leads the Dominican with 8 HRs and 32 RBIs in 41 games.

In Australia, the Auckland Tuatara lost 7-5 on Thursday.   Hansel Moreno went 1 for 4 and scored a run.

In today’s game, the Auckland Tuatara won 4-0 over Canberra Cavalry.  Hansel Moreno started in Center Field, went 0 for 1 with a strikeout(coming out in the first inning but I did not find out why).  He is now hitting .222 in 9 games playing 8 at shortstop with 3 RBIs, 3 walks, 8Ks.

Ex-Met Gavin Cecchini also played in the game for the Canberra Cavalry going 0 for 3 and is now hitting .256 in 10 games.

The Mack’s Mets Blast from the Past from December 2010, Mack looked at 3rd Basemen in the upcoming 2011 draft headed by Anthony Rendon.
