Mets rained out, to play 10th DH on Sat. New York becomes 1st team since
1978 to play double-digit twin bills before All-Star break. The Mets plan to
push Thursday’s starting pitcher, Taijuan
Walker, back one day to start on Friday. Marcus
Stroman will also move back a day to start Game 1 of Saturday’s
doubleheader, followed by Tylor Megill
in the nightcap. The Mets still haven’t decided who will pitch on Sunday; it could
be Jacob
deGrom, if he feels up to coming back on short rest.

Tim Healey Newsday: Brandon Nimmo was out of the Mets’ lineup Thursday against the Pirates — in a game postponed due to rain — because of a sore left shoulder. The Mets do not believe it to be a serious issue, and he would have been available off the bench had the game happened, manager Luis Rojas said. But it was enough to keep Nimmo sidelined for what would have been a second game in a row, after he sat out for most of nightcap in the Mets’ doubleheader against the Brewers on Wednesday.

Post: Mets hoping for more from Edwin Diaz. “It’s not what I expected,”
pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said Thursday, referring to Edwin Diaz’s first half. “I have a high
expectation for Edwin. He has some of the best stuff there is in baseball so he
has done really well, extremely well. He has done a lot of things very well,
but I have very high hopes and high expectations for him.”

Not sure if it's been reported anywhere yet but I wanted to unfortunately inform Mets minors fans/junkies that RHP Tony Dibrell has undergone TJS and is out for the year. Wish him a strong and speedy recovery. Get back the electric arm hes known for.

parts, a gorgeous day. And it was July 5, a national holiday. Yet there was

1964 |
Frank Thomas, pinch-hitting for Roy McMillan, strokes a
two-out, two-run homer off Curt Simmons, giving the Mets a 4–3 victory over
the Cardinals at Shea Stadium. The round-tripper comes in the outfielder’s
first at-bat in five weeks, due to being sidelined by a glandular infection. |
1969 |
Tom Seaver's
near-perfect game, immortalized as "The Imperfect Game," is broken
up when Cubs' rookie outfielder Jim Qualls, a lifetime .223 hitter who will
finish his career with only 31 hits, singles into center field. The 24
year-old right-hander, who tosses a five one-hitters for the Mets, will
finally get his no-no in 1978 against St. Louis pitching for the Reds. You Tube: |
1972 |
Striking out three Red Sox batters in the second inning en
route to a 16 K complete game performance against Boston, Nolan Ryan becomes
the third pitcher in baseball history to have struck out the side on nine
pitches twice during his career. The Angels fireballer, who first did it with
the Mets in 1968, joins Lefty Grove (twice in 1938) and Sandy Koufax (1962
and 1964) as the other hurlers who have accomplished the feat. |
1973 |
Interrupting Board Chairman M. Donald Grant's pep talk
during a team meeting, Mets reliever Tug McGraw
shouts out the words, "Ya Gotta Believe," which will become the
rallying cry for the club, climbing out of the cellar en route to the NL
pennant. Although New York beats Houston, 2-1, in 12 innings, their closer's
words of encouragement will not immediately light a fire under the team, as
they will continue to struggle until the middle of August. |
1970: On the first anniversary of his
near-perfect game, Tom Seaver hits his first major
league home run off Rich Nye of the Expos. Seaver goes on to pitch a complete game three-hitter for a 7 -
1 Mets win at Shea Stadium.
1988: Nolan Ryan wins his 100th game as an Astro, 6 - 3
over the Mets, and becomes the 7th pitcher
in major league history to win 100 for two different clubs. Ryan won 138 games
for the California Angels in the 1970s.
1998: Benny Agbayani, Norfolk Tides outfielder about to be called up to the Mets, is married at home plate to his fiancee Neila
before the Triple-A All-Star Game between the International and Pacific Coast Leagues. Agbayani, from Hawaii, and his bride wear Hawaiian shirts and
have a receiving line of bat-toting ballplayers. The IL whips the PCL, 8 - 4.
2000: The Yankees lose
to Mike Hampton and the Mets, 2 - 0. Armando Benitez closes for the Mets, while Andy Pettitte is the loser. The Yanks also lose Shane Spencer, who blows out his knee and ends his season. The game at Shea Stadium draws 54,283, the largest regular season crowd for the Mets
since 1970.
