Game Recap: Blue Jays Win Opener as St. Lucie Mets Drop 4th Straight

De Los Santos 2 for 4 with 2 doubles in defeat

PRESS RELEASE: DUNEDIN, Fla. (May 24, 2022) – The Dunedin Blue Jays won the series opener against the St. Lucie Mets 6-2 on Tuesday at TD Ballpark to extend their winning streak to four games while sending the Mets to a fourth straight loss. (Box Score)

Dunedin starter Matt Svanson held the Mets to one unearned run over 5.0 innings to get the win. Reliever Trenton Wallace pitched the final four innings to get the save. The Dunedin duo combined for 10 strikeouts and no walks.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Glenn Santiago grounded a ball to third baseman William Lugo that looked to be a potential double play ball to end the inning. Lugo juggled the grounder and threw the ball away at first, allowing Juan Gonzalez to come in to score for a 2-1 Blue Jays lead.

Later in the inning Rainer Nunez hit a two-out, two-run single off Mets reliever Nick MacDonald to make it 4-1 Blue Jays.

Lugo collected a RBI single in the sixth inning to bring home Omar De Los Santos to cut the deficit to 4-2.

However, the Blue Jays got a RBI single from Gabriel Martinez in the seventh inning and a solo home run from Domiano Palmegiani in the eighth inning to pull away.

Mets starter Javier Atencio made his team and state side debut. The lefty from Venezuela was promising, holding the Blue Jays to one run over 4.0 innings. He scattered three hits, walked one and struck out four.

De Los Santos went 2 for 4 with two doubles and his 22nd stolen base of the year. Stanley Consuegra and Jack-Thomas Wold also had two-hit games for the Mets.

The Mets (26-14) and Blue Jays (18-22) play game 2 of their series at TD Ballpark on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
