Report: Mets sign RHP Griffin Canning

 

According to Ken Rosenthal on X, the New York Mets have signed 28 year old Griffin Canning to a one year $4.25M deal, pending a physical, with $1M in potential bonuses.

Per his MLB,com page, Griffin Canning was dealt by the Angels for Jorge Soler,  The Braves later non-tendered him.  

Griffin started 31 games last year for the Angels going 6 and 13 with a 5.19 ERA, 171.2 innings, 130 Ks, 66 walks - 3.5 walks/9 and 6.8 K's/9, 1.398 WHIP.  This included a win against the Mets on August 4th when he K'd 8 over 5 innings, 2 runs, 1 ER, 3 hits, 4 walks.  

According to Baseball Savant, Griffin Canning uses a 4-seam fastball at 93.4 MPH 38% of the time, followed by a 88.6 MPH change 27%, a 87.7 MPH slider 24%, a 80.6 MPH curve at 11% and a 93 MPH sinker 1%.

Per MLB.com: "Selected 47th overall out of UCLA in the 2017 Draft by the Angels, Canning debuted for Los Angeles in the 2019 season. After producing so-so results in his first three seasons, Canning suffered a lower back stress fracture that ended his 2021 season prematurely and cost him all of 2022."

He's a guy that will give you innings and has showed promise at times but had some bad outings last year to drive up the ERA including one start against the Twins were he allowed 10 runs, 9 ER, in 5.2 innings against the Twins in September.  Overall in 5 MLB seasons he is 25 and 34 with a 4.78 ERA.
