Ponies Salvage Split in Doubleheader Against Fisher Cats on Wednesday
BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (20-31) were able to split a doubleheader against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (24-28) losing game one 2-1 and winning game two 4-1 on Wednesday night at Mirabito Stadium.
Game Two- Binghamton earned a 4-1 win in a game where they never trailed to earn a split. Brett Baty hit his fourth homer of the season to deep right field which got the Ponies on the scoreboard in the first. New Hampshire answered with back-to-back doubles and Will Robertson's RBI double tied the game in the second. Baty then ripped an RBI single off Fisher Cats reliever Andrew Bash (2-2) in the third and tacked on one more on a Ronny Mauricio RBI sac fly for a 3-1 lead. Carlos Cortes' RBI single made it a 4-1 game in the fifth. Ponies starter Jose Butto (3-4) pitched five innings giving up four hits and a run while walking two, striking out three and getting the win. Andrew Mitchell earned the save pitching two scoreless innings giving up a hit while walking two, striking out four and working out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh.
Game One- The Ponies fell 2-1 in game one as Spencer Horwitz's solo home run off reliever Mitch Ragan (1-2) in the sixth proved to be the winning tally in a pitcher's duel. Johneshwy Fargas reached on a bunt single in the seventh and stole second but was left stranded as the next three batters were retired. Francisco Alvarez planted his 11th homer of the season over the left field wall off New Hampshire starter Luis Quinones and Binghamton had a 1-0 lead in the first. That 1-0 lead held until Cam Eden hit his first homer at the AA level in the fifth which tied the game. Fisher Cats reliever Jimmy Burnette (1-0) earned the win in his AA debut pitching three scoreless and hitless innings walking one and striking out six. Ponies starter David Griffin pitched five innings giving up four hits and a run while walking two and striking out three in a no-decision.
The Ponies will continue their 12-game homestand against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:20 PM on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Alvarez's hit-streak has extended to eight games and he has seven homers in his last 11 games… Mauricio's team-leading RBI total is now at 33… Baty finished game two 2-2 with two RBI… All three combined runs in game one were solo homers.
