Mets Games Played On This Date: June 21

Jose Reyes hits for the cycle in 2006, Jacob deGrom gets 12th straight start with zero or one earned runs, and Vince Coleman with a tie braking HR in 1992.

1 Year ago today: Mets split a double header with the Braves.

Game One - 2021; Game #67; Monday, Jun 21 (1) NYM 4 ATL 2; boxscore;  WP: deGrom; LP: Muller; Save: Diaz; Time: 2:12; NIGHT;

Jonathan Villar 3B 1 for 2, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 K; Francisco Lindor SS 0 for 2, 1 K; Dominic Smith LF 1 for 3, 3 RBIs; Jacob deGrom (W, 7-2) 5 innings, no runs, 1 hit, 2 walks, 6 Ks;

NY Post: Jacob deGrom puts Mets’ injury concerns to rest in Game 1 win over Braves. “Most importantly to the Mets, for the first time in three starts their ace finished his performance without some kind of discomfort.”

Mets.com: deGrom's ERA at 0.50 after baffling Braves. Ace runs scoreless streak to 30 IP, records 12th straight start with one or zero earned runs.” The only hit off deGrom came on a Kevan Smith fly ball to left-center that dropped between outfielders Dominic Smith and Albert Almora Jr., who both had a play on the ball.”

Mets.com: Stat of the day - “In delivering five shutout innings in Game 1 of the Mets' doubleheader on Monday, Jacob deGrom submitted his 12th straight start with zero or one earned runs. That snapped a tie with Bob Gibson for the most consecutively in a single season in Major League history by a traditional starting pitcher (since earned runs became an official stat in 1912).”

NY Post: Dominic Smith wouldn’t let Jacob deGrom’s gem be wasted. “Smith lined the sixth pitch of an at-bat into the right-field corner for a two-out bases-clearing three-run double that provided the necessary insurance Monday in a 4-2 victory over the Braves.”

NY Post: Mets’ Jacob deGrom first pitcher checked for foreign substances under new MLB protocol. “After deGrom retired the Braves in order in the top of the first inning, three umpires, including home plate’s Ben May and crew chief Ron Kulpa, cornered him before he reached the dugout to look at his glove, hat and belt. The Citi Field crowd booed and then cheered when deGrom was cleared.”

SNY.TV: Mets' Jacob deGrom passes inspection for sticky substances. The umpires checked deGrom after the first and fifth innings.

Game Two: 2021; Game #68; Monday, Jun 21 (2); NYM 0 ATL 1;  boxscore;  WP: Anderson; LP: Castro; Save: Smith; Time: 2:33; NIGHT; Attendance:18,698;

Jonathan Villar 3B 1 for 2, double, 1 walk, 1 K; Francisco Lindor SS 0 for 3; Jeff McNeil 2B 0 for 3; Pete Alonso 1B 2 for 3, 1 K; Dominic Smith LF 2 for 3;  Jerad Eickhoff 4 innings, no runs, 3 hits, 3 walks, 3 Ks; Miguel Castro (L, 2-2), 1 inning, 1 run, 1 hit, HR;

SNY.TV: Mets takeaways from Monday's 1-0 loss in Game 2 to Braves, including poor baserunning. Jerad Eickhoff threw four scoreless innings and allowed just three hits.

Mets.com: Eickhoff steady on hill for banged-up Mets. “Rojas asked Miguel Castro to enter for the fifth. Castro promptly served up a Ronald Acuña Jr. solo homer, which proved to be the difference.”

Amazing Avenue: Final score: Braves 1, Mets 0—How not to run the bases.

Metstradamus: “Back in the 2nd inning with the score still 0-0, Pete Alonso was thrown out at third as he was trying to go first to third on a hit by Dom Smith…Jonathan Villar hit a one out double to knock Ian Anderson out of the game…{pinch runner] Jose Peraza comes in and makes the mistake that they teach you to avoid in rookie ball: He tried to take third on a ground ball to shortstop.

20 Years ago today: Year: 2002; Game #72; Friday;  Jun 21, NYM 4  Vs. KCR boxscore;  WP: Guthrie LP: Voyles Save: Time: 03:13; NIGHT; Attendance: 37,547

NY Post: "With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Mo Vaughn checked his swing. His initial reaction when he hit a soft grounder toward third – like everyone else surrounding the Mets – was, 'Oh, no.' Everyone except Tony Tarasco, that is. Tarasco’s heads-up baserunning from second in a tie game allowed him to score the winning run on Vaughn’s infield single last night. It allowed the Mets to come back against Kansas City and post a 4-3 victory, their third straight win....In the top of the ninth, Raul Ibanez hit a one-out triple to right-center... Scott Strickland fell behind pinch-hitter Luis Alicea and walked him intentionally to put runners at the corners. Mark Guthrie (2-0) entered and froze pinch-hitter Brent Mayne on a wicked curve on a full count. After walking Febles, Perez grounded the first pitch to Alfonzo for an inning-ending forceout."

30 Years ago today: 1992; Game #68; Sunday;  Jun 21, NYM 6  Vs. STL boxscore;  WP: Cone LP: McClure Save: Time: 02:49; DAY; Attendance: 33,440

Down 2-0, the Mets score 5 in the 7th.  After a run scores on a bases loaded walk and a groundout to tie the game, Vince Coleman hits a 3 run HR for the lead.  David Cone (W,7-4) allows just 1 earned run, 2 overall, over 7 innings while striking out 11.

40 Years ago today: 1982; Game #65; Monday;  Jun 21, NYM 1  Vs. MON boxscore;  WP: Lea LP: Falcone Save: Burris Time: 02:54; NIGHT; Attendance: 20,474

Each team only gets 5 hits but 4 of the Expo hits are for extra bases including 2 HRs from Gary Carter.  John Stearns' RBI single accounts for the only Mets run.

50 Years ago today: 1972; Game #59; Wednesday;  Jun 21, NYM 5 @ HOU boxscore;  WP: Koosman LP: Griffin Save: McGraw Time: 02:26; NIGHT; Attendance: 25,473

With the game ties at 3, a bases loaded error by Houston 2nd Baseman Tommy Helms allows Tommie Agee to score.  John Milner singles in another.  Tug McGraw with a 6 out save allowing just a HR to Doug Rader.

NY Post. Mets’ bullpen relay team comes up huge in inspiring win. "In possibly their most inspired victory of the season, the Mets received 8 ²/₃ terrific innings from their bullpen after Bartolo Colon was injured and beat the Royals 2-1 at Citi Field....Colon took a line drive off his right hand and had to be removed only four pitches into the game...[Hansel] Robles, most notably, helped keep the Mets afloat, pitching 3 ²/₃ innings in which he allowed one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk. The relief outing was the longest of Robles’ major league career."

National Pastime.com: Jose Reyes becomes the ninth player in Mets history to hit for the cycle. The 23 year-old shortstop hits a leadoff homer in the first, followed by a double in the third, then a triple in the fifth, and completes the feat with an eighth-inning single in the team's 6-5 loss to the Reds at Shea Stadium.

Despite Jose Reyes already hitting 3/4 of the cycle (HR, Triple and Double), Mets were down 4-2 in the 7th.  A David Wright double and a Jose Valentin HR gave the Mets a 5-4 lead.  After getting the first two outs in the 9th, Billy Wagner loaded the bases on two walks and a single before Brandon Phillips singled in two giving the Reds the lead.  Carlos Beltran led off the 9th with a walk but then Carlos Delgado flied out and David Wright grounded into a double play to end it.

National Pastime.com: On an unseasonably warm Father's Day, Phillies' hurler Jim Bunning becomes the first modern pitcher to toss a no-hitter in both leagues when he throws a perfect game to beat the Mets, 6-0. Gus Triandos also becomes the first catcher to handle a no-hitter in both leagues.

National Pastime.com: Despite the four errors made by the Phillies, Rick Wise wins the first of his 188 major league victories when Philadelphia beats the Mets at Shea Stadium in the nightcap of a twin bill, 8-2. The 18 year-old rookie right-hander's accomplishment receives little fanfare when his effort follows Jim Bunning's perfect game in the opener.
