Hot Start Leads Ponies to Victory Over SeaWolves
ERIE, PA – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (4-11, 32-52) got off to a hot start with six runs over the first two innings and that's all they would need, as they defeated the Erie Seawolves 6-1 on Thursday night at UPMC Park, snapping an eight-game losing streak.
In the top of the first, with runners on the corners and one out, Carlos Cortes drove an RBI double into the left center field gap off Chance Kirby (6-3) to bring home Brett Baty and put the Ponies up 1-0. With second and third one out, the next batter Jeremy Vasquez hit a sharp ground ball that went under Erie (9-5, 48-35) first basemen Quincy Nieporte allowing two runs to score on the error and giving the Ponies a 3-0 lead.
In the second, Zach Ashford led off the frame with a single and promptly stole second. The next batter Cody Bohanek belted an RBI double off the wall to make it 4-0 Binghamton. Luke Ritter immediately followed with a towering two-run home run over the left field wall that made it 6-0 Ponies. It was Ritter's eighth home run of the season and his second hit in as many innings to cap off the Rumble Ponies second consecutive three-run frame.
Jose Butto (6-5) had another strong outing allowing one run over six and two thirds innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Over his three starts in July, Butto is 2-0 with a 1.83 ERA, allowing just four runs, two walks, and striking out 20. It is also the right-hander's third straight start in which he went at least six innings. Kirby took the loss allowing six runs (five earned) over two innings.
Bohanek finished 3-4 with an RBI and run scored. Vasquez had a second straight multi-hit game, reaching base three times, and is on a six-game hitting streak.
The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Seawolves on Friday night with first pitch at 6:35 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 6:20 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.
Postgame Notes: Ritter finished 2-5 with the two-run homer, two RBI, and a run scored…Nick Meyer was 2-4 with a walk.
