Press Release: Mets Promote Brett Baty to Triple-A Syracuse

Mets prospects Brett Baty and José Butto promoted to Syracuse 

Second-ranked and 12th-ranked prospects to debut with Syracuse on Tuesday 

BINGHAMTON/SYRACUSE, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Syracuse Mets are proud to announce that third basemen Brett Baty has been promoted to Triple-A Syracuse.

With Baty’s promotion to Syracuse, the Triple-A Mets now have three of New York’s top five prospects and five of the Mets’ eight-best prospects, according to MLB Pipeline: Francisco Álvarez (#1), Brett Baty (#2), Mark Vientos (#5), Khalil Lee (#7), Nick Plummer (#8). 

Baty, the number two ranked prospect in the Mets system and 18th ranked prospect in all of baseball according to mlb.com, slashed .312/.406/.544 with 19 home runs, 59 RBI, and an OPS of .950 in 89 games with Binghamton. Baty was just named Friday by Minor League Baseball as the July Player of the Month for the Eastern League.

From July 12th through the 29th, Baty hit .490 over a 12-game hit streak, nine of which were multi-hit games, including six consecutive, and hit five home runs, drove in 19 runs, and carried an OPS of 1.431. He also had a team-high 16-game hitting streak earlier in the season.

On Friday July 29th against New Hampshire, Baty wowed fans at Mirabito Stadium as he drove in a career-high seven RBI, going 3-5 with two home runs, including a grand slam. Since June 3, Baty is hitting .351 with 16 home runs, 49 RBI, and an OPS of 1.072.

For the year, Baty is first in the Eastern League in hits, (106), OPS (.950) and runs scored (73). He is second in average (.312) and OBP (.406), while also sitting in the top five in slugging percentage (.544), extra base hits (41), and doubles (22).

Baty was drafted by the Mets with the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas..becoming the first high school third baseman drafted in the first round by New York since David Wright in 2001. He made his Double-A Debut with Binghamton on July 14, 2021.  

In addition to Baty’s promotion, right-handed pitcher José Butto has been promoted from Double-A Binghamton to Triple-A Syracuse. The 24-year-old is the 12th-ranked prospect in the Mets’ organization, according to MLB Pipeline. In 20 appearances with Binghamton, Butto was 6-5 with a 4.00 ERA in 92 and one-third innings pitched with 108 strikeouts. Butto ranks fifth in the Eastern League in strikeouts and sixth in ERA.   

Butto was born in Cumana, Venezuela and signed with the New York Mets as an international free agent on June 2, 2017. Butto entered this season with the best changeup in the Mets’ organization, according to Baseball America.
