Mark Sanchez of the NY Post reported how Billy Eppler is giving an end of year Press conference today. Mark noted how "At every turn, the Billy Eppler Mets have prioritized a long-term vision over the immediate future...So none of the Mets’ top 19 prospects, Eppler said, were traded at the deadline."

Jon Heyman NY Post: Why Buck Showalter had to check if Joe Musgrove was doctoring the ball.  "As one rival exec pointed out of Showalter, 'He’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.'”

MLB Trade Rumors yesterday recapped all the Mets Free Agents yesterday in "Mets Notes: Nimmo, deGrom, Eppler, Showalter". Regarding Jacob deGrom they noted: "For his part, it’s possible that deGrom isn’t particularly focused on strictly maximizing his earnings, with Tim Britton and Will Sammon of The Athletic reporting that the righty will also be looking for comfort, preferring to be closer to his Florida home."

Michael Mayer Metsmerized Online: Sources: Mets Hope to Sign Edwin Díaz Before Free Agency Starts.  Here's hoping it happens Mike.

Matt Musico Elite Sports NY: Mets’ Edwin Diaz could break two records with his next contract. Matt notes that "MLB insider Jeff Passan thinks it’s possible he could earn one worth at least $100 million. We can assume Diaz, who will be 29 years old on Opening Day, is looking for a term of either four or five years. Those two numbers combined would easily give him both the richest reliever contract in baseball history and the highest annual salary for someone coming out of the bullpen."

1969

Thanks to two great catches by Tommy Agee at Shea Stadium, the Mets beat the Orioles to take a 2-1 game lead in the World Series. The center fielder's outfield heroics save the team at least five runs in the 5-0 victory over Baltimore.

1973

The contest in which Willie Mays gets his last hit, an RBI-single that plates the decisive run in the 12th inning of the Mets' 10-7 victory over the A's in the second game of the World Series, will be best remembered for the aging superstar's misadventures in the outfield when he loses two fly balls in the sun at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The game takes four-hours and 13 minutes to complete, making it the longest Fall Classic contest ever played.

Baseball Reference:

1969 - Tommie Agee and Ed Kranepool hit home runs, Agee makes two brilliant catches in center field, and the New York Mets blank the Baltimore Orioles, 5 - 0. The underdog Mets take a 2-1 World Series lead.

1973 - The New York Mets win Game 2 of the World Series, 10 - 7, scoring four runs in an 11th inning that features the last major league hit by Willie Mays and two errors by Oakland Athletics second baseman Mike Andrews. Oakland owner Charlie Finley subsequently puts Andrews on the disabled list in a move that will be questioned by commissioner Bowie Kuhn and then reversed.
