11/13/2022 - Final Report: Mets in the Arizona Fall League

The Arizona Fall League (AFL) came to an end last night with the Mets contingent ending their season Friday night when they lost the Play-in Game.

This year's contingent was made up of some promising pitchers that the Mets, Rule 5 Eligible Players and players that saw limited time in 2022 due to injury that the Mets wanted to get a look at against the good AFL competition.

The two best performers were pitchers Right Hander Mike Vasil and Left Hander Josh Walker.  Both were named to the AFL Fall Star Game last weekend.  

Mike Vasil was the MVP of the Mets contingent this Fall.  After pitching in St. Lucie and Brooklyn during the summer, Mike went 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA.  

His last two outings may have been his best -

Coming off a great 2021 that saw Josh Walker advance all the way from High-A Brooklyn to AAA Syracuse, he was invited to Spring Training with the Mets in 2022.

Then, a shoulder injury sidelined Josh for most of the year.  He did not appear until July 30th making 4 rehab appearances for the FCL and St. Lucie Mets with a call-up to Syracuse on August 17th.  

A Starting Pitcher for the Mets in 2021, I was thinking that Josh was simply building up innings in the AFL.  However, the AFL Game Notes stated that he had transitioned to a relief pitcher.  In the AFL Josh went 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA, 8 games, 9.1 innings, 14 Ks;
