Toledo, OH – The Syracuse Mets pitching staff led the way on a rainy and chilly late April night in Toledo, shutting out the Mud Hens en route to a 2-0 win over the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. The Mets have now won three games in a row after dropping the first game in the six-game series. Syracuse has only allowed four total runs during the three-game winning streak.
In the top of the first, Syracuse (14-11) hitters provided all the run support their pitchers would need on this night. Danny Mendick walked, and Ronny Mauricio doubled to start the frame, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Mark Vientos then slashed a single into right field, plating Mendick to make it a 1-0 game. The next batter, DJ Stewart, grounded into a double play that allowed Mauricio to score and give the Mets a 2-0 edge.
From there, the Mets pitching staff completely befuddled the Toledo (15-9) hitters the rest of the night. Dennis Santana, David Griffin, Bubby Rossman, and Grant Hartwig held the Mud Hens off the scoreboard, shutting them out while allowing just two total hits. Griffin was the star of stars on this chilly night. The Curry College alum followed Santana's one-inning start in brilliant fashion, tossing five scoreless innings on just two hits with six strikeouts and not a single walk. Griffin has made two appearances with Syracuse so far this season, tossing eight combined scoreless innings with just three hits allowed and 10 strikeouts.
Bubby Rossman pitched a clean seventh and eighth in relief of Griffin, setting the stage for Grant Hartwig to finish off the game in the bottom of the ninth. The right-handed reliever tossed a 1-2-3 frame, earning his third save in as many opportunities this season. Hartwig, who grew up about an hour from Toledo in Metro Detroit, has been superb out of the bullpen for Syracuse this season. The Miami (OH) alum has allowed just two earned runs in 12 innings pitched this season, striking out 14 batters.
Not to be lost among all the pitching brilliance, Vientos also had another excellent night at the plate. The 23-year-old from Florida had three more hits in the ballgame, including two doubles. Vientos is now batting .358 this season with 14 extra-base hits and 20 runs driven in.
Syracuse continues its six-game against Toledo with the penultimate game of the series on Saturday. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m.
