From Yesterday's Post Game Notes

  • Mets were shutout for the fourth time this season...Was their first shutout loss against the Nationals since June 18, 2021 and their first at Citi Field since April 4, 2019...Have lost a season-high-tying three straight games (Also: April 3 - 5).
  • José Butto: Issued six walks, the most by a Mets pitcher since Taijuan Walker walked six batters on April 20, 2021 at Chicago-NL.
  • Brandon Nimmo (1-3, BB): Has reached base two or more times in 15 games this season, tied for the second-most in the majors.
NY Post: Mets fall flat in loss to Nationals in first game of homestand. "The Mets opened a seven-game homestand quietly, getting shut out by the Nationals for a third straight loss, 5-0, in front of 20,507 on Tuesday night. Jose Butto was wild, the top of the sixth inning was wacky and the Mets (14-10) failed to capitalize against the last-place Nationals (8-14). The Mets finished with just five hits — only one after the fifth inning — and were silenced by New Rochelle native Josiah Gray, who struck out nine in six scoreless innings."

NewsdayKeibert Ruiz (3-for-4, walk) touched Butto for a solo homer in the second inning to give Washington a 1-0 lead. Joey Meneses singled in a run in the third to make it 2-0. Otherwise, Butto (0-1, 2.79 ERA) did well, considering that after a 1-2-3 first he was in constant trouble. Butto allowed four hits, walked six and struck out one.

Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets generally looked inept and struck out a season-high 13 times. The ABs could only be described as pitiful. They had just one legitimate scoring shot, which came in the fifth inning. Brandon Nimmo drew a two-out walk to load the bases [after Brett Baty's double and Franciso Alvarez' infield hit]. But Starling Marte struck out to end the threat."

NY Post: The disastrous inning that sunk any hopes of a Mets’ comeback. "But things quickly went downhill, turning into a three-run inning as the Nationals rolled to a 5-0 win at Citi Field...Victor Robles lined a single to right field and was pushed to third base by a grounder up the middle that Luis Guillorme could have fielded had he seen it...Following the missed play with two men on and one out, Luis Garcia checked his swing on what Showalter believed should have been a third strike.  Garcia took advantage, doubling to center, driving in two and extending the Mets’ deficit to four."
