Mets 2023 Round One Draft Pick - 32nd Overall - SS Colin Houck

With their first selection in the 2023 MLB Draft, the Mets have taken High School Shortstop Colin Houck, Age 18, DOB, 9/30/2004, 6'2, 190 pounds..

Analysis by David J. Rubin -

Great value with great defensive upside & excellent tools. Most people have him in the top 15 picks in the first round. He left football to become a full-time baseball player.  I think he has great tools, but I am truly disappointed that we did not grab a top level starting pitcher, because when we choose again at 56 the top quality arms will mostly be gone .

Money is probably a large reason why he was still around at that pic because he said he was going to college so the Mets must have an idea that he will sign with them.

From MLB Pipeline:  ""He turned down football offers from Power 5 programs to commit to Mississippi State for baseball, though he's unlikely to get to Starkville as a projected first-round pick in July...Houck's combination of strength and bat speed give him plus raw power, and the right-handed hitter already shows a propensity for driving balls in the air to his pull side. He does swing and miss and chase pitches more than is ideal at times, though there's optimism that he can improve as a hitter once he concentrates solely on baseball."

Gwinnett Daily Post.com: Parkview senior Colin Houck develops into star quarterback, first-round baseball talent. "During his junior baseball season, Houck batted .412 with 15 home runs, 44 RBIs, 43 runs and nine stolen bases; he was also voted season MVP by his teammates at end-of-season banquet."

I think this was an excellent first day of the draft, especially considering that we lost 10 spots with the first selection
The team has excellent people running the draft room, and I trust that they will have done a far better job at selecting than any of the so-called experts would have predicted.
Very intriguing day one!!
