Dyron Campos 2023 St. Lucie Mets Team Set
Campos goes 3 for 4 in loss
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 10, 2023) – The Palm Beach Cardinals held off a ninth inning rally by the St. Lucie Mets to win Thursday’s game 4-3 at Clover Park (Box Score).
Down by one, the Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth when Carlos Dominguez singled and Nick Lorusso and Yohairo Cuevas worked consecutive walks from reliever Tanner Jacobson.
Dyron Campos came to the plate and lined out sharply to shortstop Dakota Harris, who was playing in and jumped up to make the catch to save the lead for the time being.
Jacobson then struck out Kevin Villavicencio for the second out.
Jacobson then squared off against Diego Mosquera, who flew a 0-2 pitch to center field that was caught by a leaping Chase Davis to end the game. Davis, the Cardinals first round draft pick, entered the game at the start of the inning as a defensive substitute.
Palm Beach starter Jose Davila was credited with the win. He held the Mets to one run on four hits over 6.0 innings. He struck out 12 and did not issue a walk.
Mets starter Felipe De La Cruz took a tough loss. He struck out nine and walked just one over 5.0 innings. He was charged with four runs (two earned) and scattered five hits.
Each team scored a run in the third inning. The Cardinals scored three times in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Mets looked like they were on the verge of turning a double play early in the inning but Mosquera was ruled not to have touched second base which would have forced out Zach Levenson. Instead of one out, there were two runners on and no outs. Kade Kretzschmar hit a two-run single later in the frame and Chase Adkinson added a sac fly.
The Mets scored twice off Hunter Hayes in the seventh inning. Campos laced a RBI triple and scored on a Villavicencio sac fly to make it 4-3.
Jean Calderon (1.1 innings) and Elliot Johnstone (2.2 innings) combined for 4.0 shutout innings of relief to keep the Mets in the game.
Campos went 3 for 4 with a triple, two singles, RBI and two runs scored.
The Mets (35-69, 11-28) and Cardinals (55-47, 18-19) play the fourth game of their series at Clover Park on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
