Tong dazzles with 6 Ks in team debut

DUNEDIN, Fla. (August 22, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets won their series opener 6-2 against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Tuesday night at TD Ballpark (Box Score).

Three pitchers combined to limit the Blue Jays to two runs on just five singles.

Starter Jonah Tong, the Mets seventh round draft pick in 2022, made his team debut. Tong made a great first impression, striking out the side in the first inning. He struck out the first batter of the second inning and fanned five of the first six batters overall.

Tong pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the third inning by inducing a popup and a fly out. Tong pitched 3.0 shutout innings in a no-decision. He gave up just one hit, walked three and struck out six.

Miguel Alfonseca pitched the middle three innings to earn the win. He held the Blue Jays to one run on three hits while striking out two. The lone Blue Jays runs scored on a double play ball in the fourth inning.

Eric Foggo pitched the final three innings for his first professional save. Foggo gave up just one run, which also scored on a ground out. He retired the final five batters he faced to end the game.

The Mets scored three runs off Jays starter Davis Feldman in the second inning. Nick Lorusso hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning with the bases reloaded Diego Mosquera grounded a two-out, two-run single up the middle to make it 3-0.

The Mets broke the game open in the eighth with three more runs. Vincent Perozo hit a RBI double, Wilfredo Lara scored on a wild pitch and Lorusso grounded out to bring home another run that made it 6-1.

Perozo led the way at the plate by going 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.

Mosquera and Yeral Martinez had two hits apiece.

The Mets (40-74, 16-33) and Blue Jays (53-62, 21-28) play the second game of their series at TD Ballpark on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
