Game Recap and Highlights: Williams Drives in Ponies’ Lone Run in Close Loss to Reading

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (37-26, 72-60) fell to the Reading Fightin Phils, 3-1, in a tight battle on Wednesday night at Mirabito Stadium.

In a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning, Rhylan Thomas led off with a single. He stole second base and reached third on a throwing error. Luis Guillorme worked a walk and with runners at the corners, Jett Williams came to the plate. Williams drove in Thomas with an RBI single to make it 1-0, recording his first RBI at the Double-A level.

In the sixth inning, Reading (30-34, 58-74) took the lead with a three-spot. Oliver Dunn hit a double, Jhailyn Ortiz followed with a game-tying RBI double, and Rixon Wingrove followed with a two-run homer to give Reading a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth inning with Reading up two runs, Orion Kerkering came in out of the bullpen. He went on to strike out five over a six-out save.

For Binghamton, Christian Scott struck out five batters over 2.2 scoreless innings and Trey McLoughlin struck out the lone batter he faced, while the bases were loaded. Luis Moreno allowed three runs over five innings in relief with five strikeouts and Matt Minnick tossed a perfect inning out of the bullpen.

The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Fightin Phils on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 6:20 p.m. on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Williams has three hits, three runs, and an RBI over his first two Double-A games…Thomas extended his hitting streak to nine games…Luisangel Acuña extended his hitting streak to five games…Agustin Ruiz snapped his 16-game on-base streak.
