Binghamton Game Recap: Ponies Gallop Past Portland for Sixth-Straight Win

PORTLAND, ME – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (16-12) defeated the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-3, on Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Binghamton has won each of the first three games in this series and six-straight games overall. Binghamton and Portland are now tied for first place in the Northeast Division.

Portland (16-12) got on the board in the first inning. Marcelo Mayer doubled and later scored on Nick Yorke's RBI single that gave the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. Center fielder Alex Ramírez threw Kyle Teel out trying to score on Yorke's single.

Angel Bastardo (0-3) spun five solid innings, before running into trouble in the sixth. He struck out a Double-A career-high 10 batters over five. In the sixth, Matt Rudick led off with a walk, Rowdey Jordan followed with a double, and Ramírez walked to knock Bastardo out of the game.

With Binghamton down 1-0 and the bases loaded with no outs in the sixth, Felix Cepeda struck out Kevin Parada and got JT Schwartz to ground into a 1-2 fielder's choice. With the bases loaded and two outs, Brandon McIlwain drew a four-pitch game-tying RBI walk to make it 1-1. Drake Osborn was the next batter and he hit into an error that scored Ramírez and Schwartz to put Binghamton up 3-1.

Cameron Foster started for Binghamton and allowed one run over 4.2 innings, while working around five hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Cam Robinson (1-1) came in to relieve Foster and got the final out of the fifth to strand the bases loaded. Robinson pitched a perfect sixth inning. Andre Scrubb allowed just one hit over two scoreless innings with two strikeouts in relief.

Binghamton scored two runs with a two-out rally in the ninth. Wyatt Young walked, Mateo Gil singled, Rudick hit an RBI single, Jordan walked, and Ramírez drew an RBI walk to make it 5-1.

Junior Santos came in to close out the game and allowed an RBI double to Mayer and RBI groundout to Teel, which made it 5-3. Santos struck out two batters, including Blaze Jordan to end the game.

The Rumble Ponies will continue their six-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) at Hadlock Field on Friday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on WNBF News Radio 1290 & 92.1 FM and on MiLB.TV.

Postgame Notes: Binghamton has won three-straight games at Hadlock Field for the first time since July 2019…The Ponies have earned at least a split of a series at Portland for the first time since August 2021…Binghamton scored two runs on RBI walks and two runs on an error...Young extended his hitting streak to six games and on-base streak to 11 games…Portland had nine hits and Binghamton had five hits…The Ponies drew seven walks.
