Brian Joura Mets360: The Brewers hit three home runs, two of which came in the eighth inning. The Mets were held homerless for the second straight game. The end result was a 5-3 loss for the Mets Wednesday night in Milwaukee. The series is now tied 1-1, with the rubber game scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

NY Post: Mets blow Game 2 lead to Brewers to set up decisive wild card finale. "This wasn’t all on Maton — the Mets went the last seven innings without scoring. But the right-hander got jumped almost from the moment he entered the game and then the Brewers went for the kill. Garrett Mitchell’s two-run homer with two outs was the crusher, after rookie Jackson Chourio’s blast (his second of the game) leading off the inning had erased the Mets’ 3-2 lead."

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Carlos Mendoza’s magic touch disappears at worst time for Mets. "Maybe if the Mets had cashed in on several golden opportunities across the first seven innings, they could have built a bigger cushion than the 3-2 advantage they had in the eighth. Maybe if Pete Alonso hadn’t tripped over his bat in the first inning, costing the Mets a run they sure could’ve used later on, things might’ve felt a little different with a two-run difference."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets, Phil Maton blow late lead to Brewers, setting up winner-take-all Game 3 on Thursday. "Phil Maton’s meltdown Wednesday night doomed them in a 5-3 loss to the Brewers, evening the best-of-three NL Wild Card Series at one win apiece. That sets up a victor-take-all Game 3 at 7:08 p.m. Thursday, still at American Family Field, Mets lefthander Jose Quintana against Brewers righty Tobias Myers. The winner will advance to face the Phillies in the NL Division Series. The loser goes home for the offseason."

NY Post: How Mets’ Game 3 starter Jose Quintana has fared in his playoff career. "It will be his fifth career postseason start and sixth career appearance in the playoffs overall, where he’s 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 18 ²/₃ innings."

At the site of the franchise's first National League game in 1969, the Expos, who are scheduled to move to Washington, D.C. next season, play their last game in their 36-year history, losing to the Mets at Shea Stadium, 8-1. Their finale, which turns out to be the rubber match of the franchise series with New York, gives the Amazin's a 299-298 advantage in the 597 contests played since 1969.

Jerry Manuel, who replaced Willie Randolph in June, inks a two-year deal to manage the Mets. The likable 54 year-old skipper, who compiled a 55-38 record in his interim role, built a three-and-a-half game division lead over Philadelphia in September, but like his predecessor, could not stop the team from collapsing at the end of the season.
