NY Post: Mets take MLB’s first known crack at Japanese star Roki Sasaki. "The Mets met with the Japanese phenom in Los Angeles on Thursday, The Post confirmed, becoming the first known team to visit in-person with Sasaki during the free-agency process...The Mets and Yankees are the only clubs whose meetings have become public thus far...Every team was invited to submit a virtual presentation, and Sasaki then was expected to host get-togethers with the clubs that progressed to Round 2."

SNY.TV: Pete Alonso free agency buzz: AL exec calls first baseman a 'complicated player'. "According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Alonso may have to wait until January or February to secure a deal, given the number of free agent first basemen available.”

NY Post: Juan Soto sweepstakes win shows Mets are ‘ready for’ heightened expectations: Reed Garrett. "Todd Zeile played Santa Claus, and Reed Garrett, dressed in green and red velvet, was by his side as a helpful elf at Citi Field, where the Mets hosted more than 125 Queens students for their annual Kids Holiday Party...'Steve and Alex, with what they’ve done to show that we’re committed to win,' Garrett said Thursday, 'I think that we took the right steps forward last year, and this year there’s going to be a little bit higher expectations.'"

Newsday: Top 10 New York sports stories of 2024. Newsday gives the Mets the top spot. "The Mets fashioned one of the most memorable non-championship seasons in their history, rallying from a slow start to advance to the NLCS before losing in six games to the Dodgers...Come the offseason, owner Steve Cohen opened his checkbook and landed one of the biggest free agent prizes of the century in outfielder Juan Soto, who secured a record 15-year, $765 million contract. OMG."

Prospect stats of the year -- each team’s best of 2024. For the Mets it was RHP Jonan Tong 34.2 K% "The 21-year-old righty enjoyed a breakout season that saw him climb from Single-A St. Lucie to Double-A Binghamton, thanks to a 92-94 mph fastball with elite induced vertical break and an above-average mid-80s curveball. Tong struck out 160 of the 468 batters he faced in those three levels and even fanned as many as 52.9 percent of his opponents during a four-appearance run in the Florida State League."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets minor league depth signings could play major roles in 2025. "These might be signings to bolster the depth way down the depth chart, but still, they do improve the depth around the margins of the roster. This is a crucial, though often overlooked, part of the roster. It’s something previous Mets executives have neglected, but something president of baseball operations David Stearns has emphasized."

The Record: Mets aren't done: 3 more predictions and our way-too-early 2025 roster projection. "Pete Alonso makes a return to Citi Field, Lineup gets a bit more balanced with Joc Pederson, Mets bolster their bullpen with best lefty on the market, Tanner Scott"

2000

After trading their All-Star shortstop to the Mets last season, the Orioles get him back, agreeing to a two-year deal with free-agent Mike Bordick. The move will send Melvin Mora, the player obtained from the Mets to replace Bordick, to the outfield, where he is a stronger defensive player.

2002

After rejecting salary arbitration from the Red Sox, Cliff Floyd (.288, 28, 79), agrees to a $26 million, four-year contract deal with the Mets. The 30 year-old outfielder played with the Marlins, Expos, and Red Sox last season.

2011

The Mets announce they are eliminating their minor league team in the Class A Gulf Coast League, a move that could save the cash-strapped team between $750,000 and $800,000. Although the elimination of a farm team may appear to be a desperate act for the financially troubled franchise, New York was one of only three clubs to have as many as nine minor league teams.
