BROOKLYN, NY (April 12, 2025) – The Cyclones took on the Hudson Valley Renegades and Mother Nature on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader at a soggy Maimonides Park. The Renegades took Game One by the score of 2-0 before the ‘Clones returned the favor in Game Two with a 2-1 win.
In Saturday’s opener, RHP Joel Diaz made the start for Brooklyn and was impressive over his 4.0 shutout frames. The right-hander scattered just three hits and a walk while striking out five. But when he departed, the Renegades were able to break the scoreless tie. After tossing a scoreless fifth inning, RHP Brendan Girton ran into trouble in the sixth. After allowing a leadoff single to 2B George Lombard, Jr. the right-hander walked the next three batters he faced to force in a run and give Hudson Valley a 1-0 edge. The Renegades would add on an unearned run in the seventh to make the final score 2-0.
The 'Clones struggled offensively, going 1-for-8 with RISP and stranding 11 men on base in a losing effort.
The back half of the doubleheader was a similar affair - with both starting pitchers showcasing strong performances. LHP Zach Thornton was outstanding for Brooklyn, tossing five shutout innings of two-hit ball, while walking one and striking out six.
Brooklyn cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, 2B Nick Roselli came through with a two-run single to give Brooklyn a 2-0 lead.
No runs came home on either side until things got dicey for Brooklyn in the top of the seventh. After a one-out trip, RHP Saul Garcia proceeded to walk three straight batters, the last of which was a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-1. Then, LF Jackson Castillo hit into a game-ending 6-3 double play, spearheaded by SS Kevin Villavicencio.
Brooklyn and Hudson Valley return to action on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. to wrap up the nine-game homestand. RHP RJ Gordon takes the ball for Brooklyn. He'll be opposed by RHP Bryce Cunningham.
No, this isn't a replay. Yes, he did it again.
