Kodai Senga with a second straight strong outing to start the season as Pete Alonso and Eduardo Escobar go deep.

From the Mets' 4/8/23  Post Game Notes:

  • Mets: Have won their first two home games of the season for the first time since 2018...Is the 12th time in franchise history the Mets have won their first two home games of the season...Was the first time in Citi Field history that the first two home games of the year have been sellouts.
  • Kodai Senga (6.0 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 BB, 6 K): Has 14 strikeouts in the first two starts of his career, tied with Steven Matz for the second-most by a Met to begin their major league career.
  • Pete Alonso (1-3, HR, 2 RBI, R, BB): Blasted a two-run homer in the fifth...Has five home runs this season through nine games, tied with John Buck (2013) Jeff Kent (1994) and Darryl Strawberry (1987) for the second-most by a Met in their first nine games of the season...Dave Kingman owns the franchise record for most home runs through the first nine games of the season with seven.
  • Jeff McNeil (1-3, 2B, RBI, R, BB): Put the Mets on the board after drawing a bases loaded walk in the first.
  • Eduardo Escobar (1-4, HR, 2 RBI, R): Lined a two-homer in the sixth, snapping an 0-8 drought with runners in scoring position to start the season.

Mets YouTube Channel: Game Highlights.

Brian Joura Mets360.com: "Kodai Senga didn’t have to wait 20 minutes to take the mound in his second start. The result was a smooth first inning and a fine six innings. Combined with long balls from Pete Alonso and Eduardo Escobar, it all added up to a 5-2 win for the Mets Saturday afternoon at Citi Field." (Subscription required)

Metstradamus: Meeting The Moment - "Kodai Senga seems like he’s going to be the focal point of any game that he pitches. Considering the fact that he chose to pitch in the most intense media market in the world, I’m sure he’s fine with that."

Tim Britton The Athletic: "On a day when the Mets, finally, started to show some depth in their lineup, Alonso served up a reminder that he remains its central force — the one player capable of consistently altering the landscape of a game in the span of a single pitch. Through nine games, Alonso has five home runs. His 25 teammates have five as well." (Subscription required)

Anthony Rieber Newsday: Mets roll past lowly Marlins again. "The Mets improved to 5-1 against Miami (and 5-4 overall). As the Mets continue to face and beat the Marlins, those three demoralizing defeats in Milwaukee last week are starting to fade away like one of Senga’s ghost forkballs."

NY Post: Max Scherzer, Mets’ offense come up big in testy win over Nationals. On a night that was supposed to be about Mad Max, the Mets were just plain mad. Francisco Lindor became the fourth Mets batter in 14 innings to leave an at-bat bruised, which set off a benches-clearing skirmish in what became a 7-3 win over the Nationals on Friday night in Max Scherzer’s Mets debut.

John Harper SNY.TV: Max Scherzer's gritty outing, team's benches-clearing defense of Francisco Lindor highlight developing difference in 2022 Mets. The Mets didn't back down from the Nationals in Friday's 7-3 win.

Mets360: "And while the storyline coming into the game was Scherzer’s return to Washington, the real story was the Mets’ offense again being productive, this time rapping out 13 hits. And this time we saw some sock, as the Mets had five extra-base hits, including a solo homer from Jeff McNeil. It was a 3-hit night for McNeil, who also drew a walk in the game. "

Metstradamus: "Speaking of Scherzer...He struck out six in six inning stint while giving up three runs. Two of these runs came on a 443 foot bomb by Josh Bell which tied the game at 3-3...Scherzer, great as he is, is going to give up bombs. We’re probably going to have to get used to that (although I’m sure that collectively, we won’t.)"

"Making his first major league start since Aug. 17, 2004, [Carlos] Zambrano (who missed the remainder of last season with a strained right flexor muscle)...put himself in immediate danger in the first with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, then watched as Adam LaRoche hit an RBI single off a diving Kazuo Matsui’s glove and Johnny Estrada lined an RBI single to left for a 2-0 Braves lead...Offensively, the Mets continued to struggle, getting only Mike Piazza’s fourth-inning solo homer to left off right-hander John Thomson."

It was Wigginton’s two-out, three-run, tape-measure homer in the third inning that allowed Al Leiter the necessary breathing room last night. Leiter earned his second victory in two starts with the Mets’ 4-2 win over Florida, a contest that ended with Armando Benitez’s eventful but scoreless ninth.
