Vasil sharp is first game for St. Lucie
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 9, 2022) – Carlos Dominguez slugged a grand slam as the St. Lucie Mets improved to 2-0 with a 7-2 win over the Daytona Tortugas on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Dominguez, who was not in the Opening Day lineup and was batting ninth, went 2 for 3 with five RBI and two runs scored. With the Mets leading 2-0 in the sixth inning he belted a two-out, two-strike grand slam off of Reynardo Cruz to open up a 6-0 lead.
That was plenty of support for the Mets pitching staff which had another dominant night. After striking out a franchise record 18 batters on Friday, five Mets pitchers combined to strike out 15 hitters on Saturday.
Mike Vasil, the Mets eighth round draft pick out of Virginia in 2021, made his St. Lucie debut and threw 4.0 scoreless innings. He gave up one single, struck out six and walked one batter. He finished his night by retiring eight Tortugas in a row.
Daniel Juarez pitched the next two innings scoreless to get the win. Dylan Hall also pitched 2.0 scoreless innings.
Miguel Alfonseca struck out a pair in the ninth inning but Daytona spoiled the Mets shutout bid when Gus Steiger hit a two-out, two-run double.
Levi David made his Mets organizational debut after Steiger's double and ended the game by striking out Sebastian Almonte.
All nine pitchers the Mets have used in the first two games have recorded a strikeout.
Justin Guerrera continued his hot start to the season by going 2 for 4 with a double, RBI and a run.
Shervyen Newton also had two hits, a double and walk for the second consecutive game.
The Mets (2-0) aim for the sweep of the Tortugas (0-2) when the teams meet in the series finale on Sunday at 5:35 p.m.
