Ponies Late Rally Falls Short in Loss to 'Ducks
BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (11-23) put the tying run on base in the ninth but could not capitalize as the Akron RubberDucks (20-15) won 5-3 on Wednesday night at Mirabito Stadium.
The 'Ducks added two quick runs in the first with an RBI single from Will Brennan, his league leading 35th of the season and Brayan Rocchio scoring on a throwing error.
Wyatt Young added the equalizer with a two-run triple to right centerfield scoring Zach Ashford and Matt Winaker in the third. It was Young's first two RBI's for the Rumble Ponies.
Akron answered right back in the third with a George Valera RBI double and Jose Tena RBI single off Alec Kisena (1-4) to make it 4-2 RubberDucks.
Julian Escobedo added a solo shot off the right field batting tunnel in the sixth and the lead increased to 5-2. It was Escobedo's second home run of the season.
A double into right centerfield and a stolen base from Jake Mangum in the sixth led to a bloop RBI single from Ashford and the Ponies cut the Akron lead to 5-3.
The Ponies started off the ninth with back-to-back singles from Young and Francisco Alvarez but a double play ball from Brett Baty and strikeout from Ronny Mauricio ended the comeback bid.
Kevin Kelly (3-1) picked up the win for the RubberDucks pitching two and a third scoreless innings giving up one hit while walking two and striking out four. Nic Enright notched his sixth save of the season.
The Ponies will continue their series against Akron Thursdsay night at 6:35 PM. Pregame coverage will start at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF & 92.1 FM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Mangum has now reached base safely in 17 of his last 18 games… Alvarez increased his hit streak to seven games with a three-hit night
