Game Recap: Seven Run Fifth Leads ‘Ducks Over Ponies

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (11-24) fell to the Akron RubberDucks (21-15) 13-1 on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium. The 'Ducks were led by a seven-run fifth inning.

Akron scored in the first inning for the third consecutive night as George Valera belted a solo shot to centerfield off Ponies starter David Griffin (0-2) to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

The 'Ducks then scored seven runs in the fifth highlighted by a George Valera grand slam to right centerfield which gave Akron a 6-0 lead. Valera finished the night 3-4 with two home runs, two walks and five RBI.

'Ducks starter Hunter Gaddis (4-1) had a no-hitter through six innings but was taken out before the seventh inning after walking one and striking out 10.

Ronny Mauricio broke up the combined no-hit bid in the seventh with an RBI double off reliever Luis Oviedo down the third base line as Brett Baty scored from first getting the Ponies on the board. It was Mauricio's 18th RBI of the season.

Akron's Daniel Schneemann went 4-5 with a two-run home run and three RBI, finishing a double shy of the cycle.

The Ponies will continue their series against Akron Friday night at 6:35 PM. Pregame coverage will start at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF & 92.1 FM.

POSTGAME NOTES: Zach Ashford has reached base safely in five-straight games and finished 1-2 with a walk and a double.
