Big Second Inning The Difference as Ponies Fall to Yard Goats in Hartford
HARTFORD, CT – The Hartford Yard Goats (45-27), propelled by an eight-run second inning, defeated the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 14-4 on Thursday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park. It is the most runs the Rumble Ponies have allowed this season.
With the game tied at two entering the bottom of the second, Hartford took a 5-2 lead on a bases loaded walk and Jimmy Herron's two-run single off Jesus Vargas (0-5).
Later in the frame, with Willy Taveras replacing Vargas and the bases loaded with two out, Brenton Doyle hit an opposite-field grand slam that made it 9-2 Hartford. The next batter Daniel Cope hit a solo home run over the left-field wall to make it 10-2 Yard Goats.
Binghamton (29-43) got on the board first for a second straight night with a Ronny Mauricio two-run shot in the first inning into the second deck in right field. It's Mauricio's 14th home run of the season and team-leading 48th and 49th RBI. Mauricio finished with three runs batted in after also driving in a run on a sacrifice fly in the third.
Manny Rodriguez hit a solo homer in the fourth inning that made it 10-4, his third of the year as the Ponies had 10 hits on the night.
Hartford starter Michael Baird (2-1) earned the win allowing four runs on six hits over five innings.
The two teams continue their series on Friday night with first pitch at 7:05 PM and pregame coverage starting at 6:50 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.
Postgame Notes: Francisco Alvarez reached base three times finishing 1-3 with two walks…Carlos Cortes on his 25th birthday was 3-3 with two singles, a double, and a walk.
