McIlwain's Heroics Lead Ponies to Thrilling Extra Inning Walk Off Win Over Fightin's

BINGHAMTON, NY – Brandon McIlwain knocked in designated runner Carlos Cortes with a single in the 10th inning off Brian Marconi (3-2) to propel the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (25-41) to a thrilling 5-4 win over the Reading Fightin Phils on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium. It was the Ponies third walk off win this season.

McIlwain not only knocked in the winning run, but also scored the game tying run in the seventh on a wild pitch after getting on with a walk. He finished the night 2-4 with a single, double, one RBI, two walks and two runs scored.

The tenth started with a walk to Hayden Senger followed by a fielder's choice from Jeremy Vasquez which moved Cortes to third. Vasquez then moved to second on a stolen base and Matt Winkaer was hit by a pitch, which led to the bases being loaded for McIlwain.

Brett Baty's towering two-run shot into the Ponies bullpen gave Binghamton a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Baty is now riding a 14-game hit streak and finished 3-4 with two RBI and reached base four times.

Kevin Vicuña's first long ball of the season made it 3-2 in the sixth. Reading (29-37) then took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on a Jonathan Guzman two-run single scoring Jhailyn Ortiz and Aldrem Corredor.

Ponies starter Jesus Vargas tallied a season high in innings pitched going six and a third giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Antonio Santos (2-1) got the win pitching two scoreless innings giving up just one hit while striking out four.

The Ponies will continue their six-game homestand against Reading on Friday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 PM on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.

POSTGAME NOTES: Alvarez's on-base streak is now at 18 games… Cortes had an RBI single in the third… The Ponies are now 4-4 in extra inning games.
