Game Recap: St. Lucie Mets Drop 4th Straight - lose 7-3 to P.B. Cardinals

De Los Santos steals league-best 39th base in defeat

JUPITER, Fla. (June 23, 2022) – The Palm Cardinals beat the St. Lucie Mets 7-3 at Roger Dean Stadium on Thursday night in the final game of the Florida State League first half. (Box Score)

The Cardinals have won the first three games of the six-game series and five consecutive games against the Mets overall. After winning the FSL East Division last Wednesday, the Mets have dropped six of the last seven games.

On Thursday the Mets got off to a quick start as their first three batters – Alex Ramirez, Omar De Los Santos and Junior Tilien – got hits against Cardinals starter Inohan Paniagua. Tilien's hit drove in Ramirez for a 1-0 lead. The Mets managed just one more run in the inning when De Los Santos scored from third base on a dropped infield fly.

The Cardinals scored three runs off Mets starter Joel Diaz in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Elijah Cabell hit a RBI single and Adanson Cruz followed with a run-scoring ground out to make it 2-2. Reliever Saul Gonzalez came in and threw a wild pitch that brought a runner home from third for the lead.

De Los Santos smacked a double in the third inning and stole third base, his 39th steal of the season. Tilien brought De Los Santos home with a ground out to tie the game 3-3.

The Cardinals ambushed Christian Scott in the bottom of the third inning. Five of the first six batters they sent to the plate recorded hits and three scored. Aaron McKeithen broke the tie with a run-scoring double. Jesus Orecchia and Cabell hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 6-3.

The Mets offense could not get it going against Paniagua (4-4), who made a quality start. He pitched six innings, scattering seven hits and allowing three runs. He walked one and struck out eight.

Cardinals reliever Gustavo Rodriguez did not give up a hit over the final three innings to pick up his second save.

Scott (2-2) rebounded from the shaky third inning and pitched 4.1 innings. He gave up eight hits and four runs while striking out seven.

Tilien went 2 for 4 with two singles and two RBI.

De Los Santos 2 for 4 with two runs.

The Mets (40-25) and Cardinals (30-34) begin the second half of the FSL season on Friday with the fourth game of their six-game series. First pitch at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is 6:30 p.m.
