Game Recap and Highlights: DeGrom Dazzles, St. Lucie Mets Enjoy Big 8-2 Win Over Jupiter

Jacob deGrom face 6 batters, strikes out 5 

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 4, 2022) – New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom returned to game action by making a rehab start for the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday vs. the Jupiter Hammerheads. (Box Score) 

In front of a season-best crowd of 4,256 at Clover Park, deGrom put on a show by striking out five of the six batters he faced. DeGrom's first two pitches to Jupiter leadoff hitter Osiris Johnson were 100 mph fastballs. DeGrom would strike out Johnson swinging and then strike out the next batter Carlos Santiago swinging as well. 

DeGrom plunked No. 3 hitter Ian Lewis on a wayward 0-2 slider but recovered to strike out Brady Allen looking to end the first inning. 

DeGrom struck out both batters he faced in the second inning and was taken out of the game at 24 pitches (18 strikes) as planned. 

DeGrom's final line: 1.2 innings pitched, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts and 1 hit batter. 

The Mets offense took five straight walks from Jupiter starter Sandro Bargallo in the bottom of the second and scored three runs in the inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. 

Jack-Thomas Wold stroked a RBI double in the third inning and William Lugo launched a two-run homer in the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead. 

Tzu-Wei Lin, on a minor league rehab assignment, hit a home run in the eighth for the final run. 

Reyson Santos replaced deGrom in the second inning and got the last out. 

Dominic Hamel (5-2) pitched the next 6.0 innings to get the win. He limited the Hammerheads to two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out five. 

Raimon Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game. 

The Mets (44-30, 4-5) go on the road Monday to face the Daytona Tortugas. First pitch on Independence Day from Jackie Robinson Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
