The International Free Agent Period begins today.  The Mets are expected to sign SS Elian Pena to a $5 million bonus.

MLB.com: Today is international signing day: Here's what to know. "No. 3: Elian Pena, SS (Dominican Republic). Evaluators rave about Pena’s off-the-field makeup and in-game savvy, believing he has legitimate five-tool impact potential across the board. Equipped with oodles of bat speed from the left side, he complements his propensity for hitting the ball hard with some of the most advanced plate discipline seen on the international scene in years. It’s rare for a prospect so young to have a keen eye for the zone, but Pena routinely puts it on display while spraying the ball to all fields when he does cut it loose."

Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: The clock is ticking on Mets’ staredown with Pete Alonso. "I expect the Mets will be among the most active teams between now and the start of spring training and — with how this market has lagged — perhaps up to Opening Day. They still need (at minimum) a bat, two relievers and a supplemental position player. Unless the Mets fill first base from outside, or by moving Mark Vientos across the diamond after adding an outside third baseman, they could keep the door ajar for Alonso. Cohen, after all, has demonstrated a willingness to take a payroll where other teams would not." (Subscription Required)

Mike Vaccaro NY Post Sports+: Carlos Beltran’s Hall of Fame possibility presents Mets fans a curveball. "When Beltran does get in, it is a near certainty he will go in as a Met, because he had his greatest years as a Met...I still find it remarkable how many Mets fans I know can’t let go of the moment, on the night of Oct. 19, 2006, when Beltran stood frozen at the wicked curveball that Adam Wainwright threw him with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 3-1 game. It was a Hall of Fame pitch thrown by a borderline Hall of Fame pitcher (and, if we’re being honest, the killer was the grooved changeup Beltran let pass for strike one two pitches before)." (Subscription Required)

By an overwhelming 20–2 vote, the New York City Council named the new stadium in the Queens for William A. Shea, the attorney who brought the National League back to the Big Apple. The ballpark, known initially as Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium, serves as the Mets' home for 44 seasons.
