Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Mets dropped their sixth game in a row on Wednesday night, falling to the Rochester Red Wings, 15-8, at NBT Bank Stadium. Rochester has now won the first two games in the series and 14 of the 20 prior games against the Mets so far this season.
After the first two innings were scoreless, the game opened up in a big way in the top of the third. Rochester (58-73) scored five times as they sent eight men to the plate in the frame, powered by a pair of big long balls. First, Lucius Fox hit a go-ahead, three-run home run with one out in the inning. Then, after John Nogowski singled, Jake Alu launched a two-run shot over the right-field fence to make it a 5-0 game.
In the bottom of the third, Syracuse (53-78) roared right back, amazingly scoring eight runs of their own to take an 8-5 lead into the fourth inning. The Mets sent 11 men to the plate in the eight-run frame, buoyed by two gigantic hits. First, with the bases loaded and one out, Jake Mangum came to the plate. He promptly unloaded the bases, lacing a three-run double to the left-center field wall to make it a 5-3 game. Later on in the inning, after a wild pitch scored Mangum to make it a 5-4 game, the bases were loaded with two outs. Nick Dini then brought everybody home, launching a no-doubt grand slam that sailed over the right-field wall with ease. His ninth home run of the season made it an 8-5 Syracuse game in the blink of an eye.
However, the good news on the night for the Mets would end right there. The Red Wings promptly surged back in front with five runs in the fourth inning, sending nine men to the plate in the fateful frame. After a bases-loaded walk from Fox brought home one run and a sacrifice fly from Nogowski brought in another, Jake Alu came back to the plate with two on base and two outs in an 8-7 game. Alu hit another home run, this one a three-run shot to turn it into a 10-8 game and give Rochester the lead for good. Alu, a former Boston College Eagle, finished the game 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored, and five runs driven in.
It remained a 10-8 game all the way until the top of the seventh inning when the Red Wings pulled away with four more runs. A Donovan Casey RBI single and a two-run triple from Andrew Stevenson powered yet another offensive explosion from Rochester that also included a run scoring on a wild pitch and error as part of a four-run seventh to give the Red Wings a 14-8 lead. Stevenson now has 21 hits and 12 runs driven in against Syracuse this season.
The Red Wings put the capper on their scoring bonanza via a solo home run from Nick Banks in the ninth that made it a 15-8 game. Banks also homered in Tuesday night’s game.
By the end of the ballgame, every single Rochester Red Wing reached base at least once. Eight different Rochester players scored runs with six players scoring at least two runs. The Mets also had a balanced attack, as all but one starter reached base at least once by the end of the night.
New York Mets pitcher Tylor Megill made his first Major League rehab appearance with Syracuse. Megill pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning that included a strikeout. In three rehab appearances (two with Binghamton and one with Syracuse), Megill has thrown three perfect innings, striking out seven of the nine batters he has faced.
Syracuse continues its six-game series against the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Right-hander José Butto is scheduled to start for the Mets, opposed by right-hander Joan Adon for the Red Wings.
