Game Recap and Highlights: Syracuse drops series opener to Red Wings, 3-2, on Tuesday night

Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Mets came up just short on Tuesday night, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Rochester Red Wings at NBT Bank Stadium. The game marked the start of a six-game series and a two-week-long homestand. Just 20 games remain in the 2022 season after Tuesday night's game.

 After the first two innings of the game were scoreless, Rochester (57-73) got on the board with a run in the top of the third. After a one-out triple from Daniel Johnson, Andrew Stevenson came to the plate and doubled Johnson home later in the inning for a 1-0 Red Wings lead. Stevenson, a former LSU Tiger, has played excellent baseball against the Mets so far this season. He has 20 hits and has driven in ten runs.   

The Red Wings scored another run to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. First, Rochester loaded up the bases with one out via singles from Jecksson Flores and Lucius Fox, plus a John Nogowski walk. Then, Jake Alu chopped a groundball to second base that scored Flores on the fielder's choice and made it a 2-0 game after six innings.  

That second run would close the pitching line for Harol González, who had an excellent outing. The starter for Syracuse (53-77) went five and one-third innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. The right-hander pitched to contact, walking just one batter with two strikeouts.   

The Red Wings scored again in the top of the seventh when Nick Banks hit a solo home run to make it a 3-0 game. The former Texas A&M Aggie has now slugged eight home runs in 64 Triple-A games so far this season. Banks has now hit two round-trippers against the Mets as well this season.   

In the eighth, Syracuse got back in the ballgame. With nobody on base and two outs, Dominic Smith and JT Riddle hit back-to-back solo home runs to slim the deficit from 3-0 to 3-2. They were the fifth and sixth homers of the season for Smith and Riddle respectively. Riddle also hit a home run in the series at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last week.   

In the ninth, the Mets looked poised for even more dramatics. With a runner on base and one out, Daniel Palka came on as a pinch-hitter looking to end the game with one swing. The slugger almost did, hitting a drive to right field that looked off the bat like a home run to end the game. However, the ball died in the chillier early-September air, allowing Donovan Casey to make the catch mere inches in front of the right-field wall for a pivotal second out in the ninth inning. The next batter, Travis Jankowski, grounded out to end the game and hand Syracuse its fifth straight loss. Three of those five losses have been by just one run.   

Syracuse continues its six-game series against the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Connor Grey is scheduled to start for the Mets, opposed by right-hander Patrick Murphy for the Red Wings.
