FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 9, 2022) – Inclement weather turned Friday's doubleheader between the St. Lucie Mets and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels into a single seven-inning game that was won 4-0 by the Mussels.
Game 1 of the doubleheader was delayed at the start by 1 hour and 7 minutes due to rain. The game went into a 1 hour and 56 minute weather delay in the bottom of the fourth. At that point it was determined that after the game was resumed and concluded it would be the only game of the night and the second game would be pushed to Saturday as part of a doubleheader.
The Mussels used two pitchers in the shutout who combined for 12 strikeouts. Starter Marco Raya held the Mets to one hit and one walk over four innings. He struck out seven.
Kyle Jones pitched the final three innings to get a win in his team debut. He scattered two singles and struck out five.
Mussels pitchers have limited the Mets to five singles and no runs through 16 innings in the series.
Fort Myers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ben Ross hit a leadoff home run against Calvin Ziegler (0-6).
Keoni Cavacao hit a run-scoring ground out in the third inning for a 2-0 lead.
After the mid-game rain delay, the Mussels hit into a double play against Javier Atencio in the fourth inning. However, a walk and two singles pushed across another run. Noah Cardenas hit a RBI single to make it 3-0.
Cavaco slugged a home run off Atencio in the fifth inning for the final run of the night.
