Mike Puma NY Post: Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner expected to reach new deal with Mets. "Jeremy Hefner, according to sources, is finalizing a new contract with the Mets that will keep him as pitching coach for next season and potentially beyond...Hefner’s agenda for next season will include getting the pitchers accustomed to the pitch clock that MLB will implement. To that end, the Mets want the clocks up and running at the start of camp so pitchers can begin acclimating as they throw their initial side sessions of the spring."

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets, Yankees had nowhere to go but down after seasons peaked far too early.  For the Mets he points to "Sept. 1, the Mets beat Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, 5-3, in front of 36,908 spirited fans at Citi Field. It gave the Mets a series win against the best team in baseball, as well as a 4-3 advantage in the season series. The Mets were firing on all pistons: hitting in the clutch every day, great pitching every day (six strong from Chris Bassitt in this one, a day after Jacob deGrom had thrown seven three-hit innings vs. L.A.)."

Larry Brown on Sports: Yankees could steal key free agent away from Mets? "New York Mets writer Michael Mayer reported on Tuesday that, though the Mets feel good about their chances of retaining outfielder Brandon Nimmo, the Yankees have internally discussed the idea of signing Nimmo."

Rising Apple: How the Joey Lucchesi trading is aging badly in multiple ways. While Lucchesi missed half of 2021 and all of 2022 due to Tommy John Surgery,  the minor league player Dealt for him, Endy Rodriguez "is rising fast through the minor leagues...Combined in High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A, Rodriguez hit 39 doubles, 25 home runs, and drove in 95."

Danny Abriano SNY.TV: How should Mets go about rebuilding bullpen for 2023?  Danny suggests 1) Re-sign Edwin Diaz; 2) Explore Reunions with the Late-Inning Guys; 3) Add one late-inning reliever from outside the organization; 4) Find a diamond in the rough; 5) Assess the in-house options - Bryce Montes de Oca is mentioned."

Arizona Fall League:

The Mets contingent had the day off yesterday.  They resume play today at 3:30 with Christian Scott the scheduled starting pitcher.  In 3 starts this year Christian has pitched 9.1 inning, 14 runs - 13 earned, 21 hits, 4 HRs, 3 walks, 9 Ks, 13.50 ERA with a 2.571 ERA.  

Winter Baseball:

Ronnie Mauricio's game last night was postponed due to inclement weather.  His team is scheduled to play tonight at 7:30 Eastern.  If you subscribe to MLB.TV they are once again carrying the Winter games form the Dominican.

In Game 5 at Shea Stadium, the Yankees win their third consecutive World Series, the fourth title in five years, and record 26th championship by defeating the Mets, 4-2. Luis Sojo's ninth-inning two-out, tie-breaking single off starter Al Leiter is the decisive hit.

Bobby Valentine becomes the first foreign manager to win the Japan Series in the 70-year history of Japanese baseball. Sweeping the Hanshin Tigers, the former Rangers and Mets skipper leads the Chiba Lotte Marines to their first league championship in 31 years.

1979 - Commissioner Bowie Kuhn notifies Hall of Famer Willie Mays that if he accepts a position with the Bally Manufacturing Corporation, owner of several gambling casinos, he must disassociate himself from major league baseball. Mays, a part-time coach and goodwill ambassador for the Mets, will relinquish his duties upon accepting Bally's job offer.
