The "Hot Stove" League officially kicked off yesterday as 8 Mets officially declared themselves Free Agents: RHP Edwin Diaz; RF Brandon Nimmo; RHP Trevor Williams; RHP Seth Lugo; RHP Trevor May; RHP Adam Ottavino; CF Tyler Naquin; LHP Joely Rodriguez; Tommy Hunter is also eligible to be a Free Agent but as of this morning was not listed on the MLB.com transaction log.
Then, as we had yesterday on Mets News and Links: Mets and Edwin Diaz are in an agreement on a 5 year, $102 million contract.
NY Post: Mets making Edwin Diaz highest-paid reliever ever with $102 million contract: "The deal includes a $12 million signing bonus, a sixth-year option and an opt-out after three years, plus a full no-trade clause through the opt-out year."
Joel Sherman NY Post: Edwin Diaz’s record contract is worth the risk for Mets. "Keep in mind that Diaz is actually six months younger than Smith. He is receiving his deal after his age-28 season...That Chapman and Craig Kimbrel fell in performance on long-term deals as they approached their mid-30s is a worry; this contract, if Diaz does not use his option after the third season, will carry him through his age-33 season."
Brian Joura Mets360: Mets reportedly re-sign Edwin Diaz to $102 million deal. "All in all, it’s better to have Diaz than not to have him, so long as the money spent on him doesn’t keep the club from re-signing Jacob deGrom or Brandon Nimmo."
Mike's Mets: These Aren't the Wilpon Mets: "Besides having such an excellent year — the best season by a Mets closer I've witnessed — Edwin DÃaz earned some respect from me from being flexible about being used in spots other than the familiar ninth-inning save opportunities. Many closers are resistant to that sort of usage. But with the way the game is evolving, a closer's willingness to step outside of the traditional comfort zone is important."
Mets.com: DÃaz's deal completes the first item off what should be a busy offseason for the Mets, who must rebuild their bullpen around him while also filling out multiple rotation spots and potentially upgrading the offense.

Receiving 25-of-32 first-place votes, the BBWAA selects
Rafael Furcal as the National League Rookie of the Year. The Braves
shortstop, who is the only player listed on all 32 ballots, easily
outdistances Cardinal pitcher Rick Ankiel and Mets outfielder Jay Payton. |
2012 |
With a year remaining on his contract, outfielder Jason
Bay is released by the Mets after three very disappointing seasons with New
York. The move will not save the team any money as they will be responsible
for the $21 million owed to the former National League Rookie of the Year,
who signed a big free-agent deal with the club in 2009. |
