Mets Links:

NY Post: Mets agree to four-year, $50 million extension with Jeff McNeil. "The deal, which will become official once McNeil passes a physical, includes a fifth-year option that could bring the total value to $63.75 million."

SNY.TV: "McNeil, 30, is coming off his best season in which he was named an All-Star and took home the NL batting title with a .326 average. Over five seasons with the Mets, McNeil owns a career slash line of .307/.370/.458 with 46 home runs, 121 doubles and 214 RBI in 516 games."

Brian Joura Mets360: "McNeil had two things working against him, as injuries forced him to come up later than most guys who make an impact at the MLB level. The other was a touch of uncertainty, given his 2021 results. Still, Mets fans should be elated – even with Steve Cohen’s bottomless pockets – to get a player of this caliber locked up at this contract."

John Harper SNY.TV: "More significantly, for the moment, McNeil’s proposed new deal also offers reason to believe the Mets are working toward getting Pete Alonso to agree to a long-term contract as well...As McNeil was, Alonso is two seasons away from reaching free agency. But as one of the premier power-hitters in baseball, with 130 home runs in his three full seasons in the big leagues (plus 16 more in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season), the big first baseman has the leverage to command a lot more money."

Mike Puma NY Post Sports+: What are the chances David Wright or Jose Reyes join the ex-Mets on paths to the Hall of Fame? "Ultimately it’s easy to see two members of the ’06-09 Mets (Wagner and Beltran) getting to Cooperstown — with Wright fighting a long-term battle to reach 75 percent and Reyes excluded from the party. Also from Mike Puma in the same Article: "Keith Hernandez’s contract negotiations have resumed with SNY, according to a source, with the former first baseman requesting a new deal that would pay him significantly above the $775,000 he received last season for about 110 games." MLB.com: Here are all of our No. 1 overall prospects, ranked - Jonathan Mayo looks at all the past #1 rated prospects from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (ranked #1) to Shohei Ohtani (#2) to Mike Trout (#6) and ranks Francisco Alvarez #16 in this group who he says: "He deserves credit for being so good at such a young age, reaching Triple-A as a 20-year-old. Another positive in his column is position scarcity: His catching needs work, but he can stick there, and there aren’t many guys who can mash like him behind the plate. The other side of the coin is the fact that his defense is just so-so and he's not perceived to be a slam-dunk No. 1 guy."

Traded to the Mets yesterday, first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, who caught and kept the ball used to make the final out, giving the Red Sox their first World championship in 86 years, will lend his souvenir to his former club. The historic horsehide, which Boston claims belongs to the team, will be encased within a plaque and become part of the victory tour, featuring the World Series trophy.

Aaron Heilman is traded for the second time this offseason when the Mariners swap the 30-year-old right-hander to the Cubs for utility infielder Ronny Cedeno and southpaw Garrett Olson. Seven weeks ago, the Mets dealt the much-maligned reliever to Seattle as part of a three-team trade that included the Indians.
