Mets 360: Gut Reaction: Mets 5, Marlins 3: "In a continuation of what we saw in Grapefruit League play, it was a crisp game that flowed so much better because of the pitch clock."

CBS Sports:

Metstradamus: Another Opening Day, Another Win, Another Body Part To Google. "Opening Day. Where everyone is 0-0, and young fans fancy their team’s pennant chances. A time of hope springing eternal. A time where new players come to make you forget about the old players. Where you get texts of 'Let’s Go Mets' and 'Happy Opening Day'. And this year’s new entry: 'Holy Crap, Verlander!!!'"

MLB Trade Rumors: "The Mets announced that they will place right-hander Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list with a “low-grade teres major strain.” According to the team, Verlander “will continue throwing at moderate intensity” and be reevaluated in a week. They’ll provide a further update at that time. Righty Tylor Megill will be recalled from Triple-A and take Verlander’s spot in the rotation for the time being"

1994

The Mets trade hard-luck right-hander Anthony Young to the Cubs for shortstop Jose Vizcaino. A-Yo holds the major league record for the most consecutive losses by a pitcher.

1998

In the longest scoreless opener in National League history, pinch-hitter Alberto Castillo's single with two outs and the bases loaded gives the Mets a 1-0, 14-inning victory over the Phillies. The most extended Opening Day game in major league history occurred in 1926 when the Senators blanked the Philadelphia A's in 15 innings, 1-0.

2003

At Shea Stadium, the Mets Opening Day lineup includes the first regular starting double-play combination in major league history featuring natives from Puerto Rico. Second baseman Roberto Alomar and shortstop Rey Sanchez combine to make two twin killings as the Cubs drub New York, 15-2.

 Baseball Reference:

2001 - After 31 years in Three Rivers Stadium, the Pittsburgh Pirates move into their new $262 million home at PNC Park, losing to the New York Mets, 4 - 3, in an exhibition game. The 38,000 seat stadium is nestled at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers with a spectacular view of the city.

2010: With spring training coming to an end, the disabled list is getting crowded. Among those who will miss the beginning of the season are Mets SS Jose Reyes, who missed most of 2009 with injuries and joins teammates Daniel MurphyCarlos Beltran and Kelvim Escobar on the list.

Two Years ago today - the Mets and Francisco Lindor agreed on a contract extension:

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: Lindor, Mets have 10-year extension. “…a 10-year, $341 million contract extension, according to a source. The deal, which the Mets have not confirmed because it is not yet official, is the richest ever for a shortstop, and the third largest in Major League history. Lindor's previous $22.3 million salary for 2021 remains unchanged, making the Mets' total commitment to him $363.3 million over 11 seasons. He will be a Met until at least his 38th birthday.”
