Game Recap: Flying Tigers Blank St. Lucie Mets 4-0 in Series Opener


 

Williams reached base 3 more times in loss

 

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 18, 2023) – The Lakeland Flying Tigers shut out the St. Lucie Mets 4-0 (Box Score) in the series opener at Clover Park on Tuesday evening.

 

Four Flying Tigers pitchers combined for a two-hit effort. Starter Edgardo Ibarra fired 4.0 hitless innings. Jett Williams was the only Met to reach base against Ibarra. Williams was hit by a pitched and walked.

 

Quinn Gudaitis pitched two innings behind Ibarra to get the win. Gudaitis got a key double play ball with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to keep a 1-0 lead. Max Alba chipped in with two innings and Trevin Michael closed out the ninth in a non-save situation.

 

Mets starting pitcher Layonel Ovalles (L,1-1) was solid over 4.0 innings. He allowed one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

 

Lakeland's Dominic Johnson created his own run to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Johnson hit a two-out single, stole second and third base and scored on a wild pitch to put the Flying Tigers up 1-0.

 

The Flying Tigers broke the game open with a three-run seventh inning. Andrew Jenkins hit a run-scoring single, and later with two outs Manuel Sequera punched a two-run single to make it 4-0. The three runs were charged to reliever Benito Garcia.

 

The two hits for the Mets came on a double by Jefrey De Los Santos in the fifth inning and a single by Adrian Hernandez in the eighth. De Los Santos was thrown out trying to stretch his double to a triple. The double made it 10 games in a row to start the season with an extra base hit for the Mets.

 

The Mets (3-7) and Flying Tigers (5-5) play the second game of their series on Wednesday. First pitch from Clover Park is 6:10 p.m.
