Game Recap and Highlights: St. Lucie Mets overpower Tortugas, 8-2

 


St. Lucie clubs season-high 4 homers to go up 3-2 in series

 

ST. LUCIE METS PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE Fla. (June 10, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets bounced back from Friday’s difficult defeat by pounding the Daytona Tortugas 8-2 on Saturday at Clover Park (Box Score). 

The Mets slugged a season-high four home runs, including three in the fifth inning, to pull away for their third win in the series. 

JuniorTilien started the game with a bang, bashing a two-run shot in the first inning off Daytona starter Johnathan Harmon. 

Jacob Reimer started a two-out rally in the third inning with a double. Vincent Perozo followed with a RBI single to increase the lead to 3-0. 

The Tortugas scored a run on a ground out in the top of the fifth inning to make it 3-1. They loaded the bases with one out in the inning but Jordany Ventura struck out Carlos Jorge and got Sal Stewart to fly out to keep the Mets in the lead. 

The Mets flexed their muscles against reliever Jean Correa in the bottom of the fifth. Tilien hit the first pitch of the inning for his second home run of the game. He became the first Met this season with a multi-homer game. It was his fifth long ball of the season. 

Two batters later Vincent Perozo mashed a two-run homer into the right field berm to put the Mets up 6-1. It was his third home run in the past two weeks and second of the series. 

Rhylan Thomas capped the inning with another two-run homer to make it 8-1. It was his first professional home run. 

The fifth inning was the second time in four games the Mets hit three homers in an inning. They accomplished the feat in the third inning on Wednesday. 

Ventura pitched well in 4.2 innings of relief to earn the win. He limited Daytona to two runs (one earned) on just two hits. 

Christopher Vasquez pitched the final 2.1 innings to close out the win. 

The game was started by MLB rehabber Stephen Ridings (lat). He pitched a perfect first inning with one strikeout. 

Eric Foggo tossed a hitless second inning before turning it over to Ventura in the third inning. 

Reimer reached base five times for the second time in the last week. He went 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles, two walks and was hit by a pitch. 

Tilien went 3 for 4 with two home runs, a single, walk and three RBI. 

Perozo was 2 for 5 with a homer, single and three RBI. 

Thomas went 2 for 4 with a homer, single and two RBI. 

The Mets (19-36) and Tortugas (23-33) play their series finale at Clover Park on Sunday at 12:10 p.m.
