Season-best crowd of 4,396 enjoy big victory, fireworks

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 3, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets outslugged the Dunedin Blue Jays 13-11 in a thriller in front of a crowd of 4,396 at Clover Park on Monday night (Box Score).

The Mets slugged three two-run homers in the middle and late stages of the game, then held off a furious rally by the Blue Jays in the ninth.

The two teams exploded on offense out of the gate with the Mets building a 5-1 first inning lead and the Blue Jays trimming the lead to 7-6 by the fourth inning.

Dyron Campos bashed a two-run homer of Keiner Leon in the fifth inning to open up a 9-6 lead. Karell Paz tagged Michael Brewer for a two-run homer, his first of the year, to build an 11-6 advantage in the seventh. Jose Hernandez launched two-run blast in the eighth against Brewer to put the Mets up 13-7.

The Blue Jays rallied back against a wayward Luke Bartnicki in the top of the ninth when Bartnicki walked a batter and plunked two to load the bases with no outs. Jeffrey Wehler mashed a wall-scraping three-run triple to make it 13-10.

Bartnicki settled down to record a run-scoring ground out, a pop out and another ground out to keep the tying run on deck and end the game.

The Mets scored 13 runs on eight hits and eight walks one day after they were limited to one run and four hits in an 11-inning loss.

Campos went 2 for 3 with a home run, double, four RBI and three runs scored. Paz went 2 for 4  with a homer and three RBI.

Mets starter Javier Atencio grinded through three innings and gave up four runs.

Elliot Johnstone, the first reliever used by the Mets, pitched three excellent innings to get the win. He gave up one hit on a two-run homer but retired the last seven batters he faced to stabilize the game for the Mets on the mound.

Eric Foggo chipped in with two innings of one-run ball for his first hold.

Dunedin starter Irv Carter didn’t make it out of the first inning. He walked three, including Jose Hernandez to force in a run, and gave up a two-run double to Campos and a run-scoring single to Paz before being yanked with two outs. He took the loss.

Wehler went 3 for 5 with home run, triple and five RBI.

The Mets (3-5, 27-46) are on the road Tuesday to face the Lakeland Flying Tigers. First pitch at Joker Marchant Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The game can be heard on stluciemets.com.
