Game Recap and Highlights: Strong Pitching Leads Ponies to Victory Over Hartford

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Behind another solid start from Luis Moreno, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (2-3, 37-37) knocked off the Hartford Yard Goats 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Mirabito Stadium.

Moreno took the mound for the first time since earning the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week award last week. He twirled five-plus innings of one-run ball. Moreno allowed four hits and issued three walks, while striking out seven batters.

DaisonAcosta and Dedniel Núñez were lights out in relief. They combined to throw four perfect innings with four strikeouts. Acosta came in with two runners on base and no outs in the sixth and retired the first three hitters he faced. Núñez struck out three batters, including Cristopher Navarro to end the game.

Binghamton took the lead in the first inning when Brandon McIlwain grounded out and drove in Wyatt Young to make it 1-0.

The Ponies added three more runs in the fourth inning. Jose Peroza led off the inning with a walk and McIlwain followed by getting hit by a pitch. With two on and no outs, Agustin Ruiz smoked a two-run double to give Binghamton a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jose Mena hit into a two-base error that allowed Ruiz to score to make it 4-0.

Hartford (3-2, 32-40) scraped across a run against Moreno in the sixth inning. Yanquiel Fernandez led off with a walk and Jack Blomgren was then hit by a pitch. Julio Carreras was the next batter and drove in Fernandez with an RBI double to make it 4-1.

The Rumble Ponies will finish their series with the Yard Goats on Monday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM and pregame coverage gets underway at 6:20 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Moreno has now struck out at least seven batters five times this season and in each of his last four starts…Acosta has combined to throw three perfect innings in relief with three strikeouts in two appearances this series…Binghamton’s bullpen has allowed just one earned run and has totaled 16 strikeouts over 18.1 innings in this series.
