Cuevas drives goes 2 for 5, drives in 3
ST. LUCIE PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 26, 2023) – For the second straight day, the Bradenton Marauders overcame a four-run deficit and beat the St. Lucie Mets 9-7 on Camp Day at Clover Park (Box Score).
It was the third game in the last four that the Mets have lost despite leading by four runs.
The Mets broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when Yohairo Cuevas singled home Carlos Dominguez with a bases loaded single to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. Bradenton reliever Jorge Ramos then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Jacob Reimer to score from third base to make it a 4-2 Mets advantage.
Cuevas drilled a two-out, two-run single up the middle in the seventh inning to expand the Mets lead to 6-2.
Luis A. Rodriguez pitched a scoreless sixth and a perfect seventh. He came out to pitch the eighth inning and walked the first two batters. Elliot Johnstone replaced Rodriguez and plunked two batters in a row to load the bases and force home a run that made it 6-3. Johnstone then walked Yordany De Los Santos to force in another run to make it 6-4.
Jimmy Loper came in from the bullpen and struck out the first batter he faced but then Tanner Tredaway singled to make it 6-5 and reload the bases. Geovanny Planchart hit a fly ball that dropped fair down the right field line to bring in two runs and give the Marauders a 7-6 lead.
The Mets tied the game 7-7 on a Dominguez RBI ground out in the bottom of the eighth.
Loper returned to the mound in the ninth and plunked and walked the first two batters. Nick Cimillo then hit a two-run single to the put the Marauders back up, 9-7.
Owen Sharts pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts to end the game and record his first save.
The Mets walked or hit seven batters in the eighth and ninth innings. All seven scored. The Marauders only mustered three singles in the two innings.
For the second consecutive game seven of the nine Mets batters recorded a hit. Jett Williams went 2 for 5.
Cuevas went 2 for 5 with three RBI.
Reimer reached base four times for the second time in three games. He singled once and walked three times.
Sam Coonrod (lat) pitched a perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts in his fourth game of a MLB rehab assignment.
Mets starter Douglas Orellana bounced back from a two-run first inning to throw three straight scoreless frames. He gave up two runs on three hits in 4.0 innings. He walked four and struck out four.
The Mets (32-59, 8-18) and Marauders (53-38, 18-8) play the third game of their series at Clover Park on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. It is Dollar Night with $1 draft beer, $2 Bud and Bud Light aluminum bottles, $2 hot dogs, $1 soda and $1 popcorn.
