Mets 2 Marlins 0 Post Game Notes - 4/7/2025

  • Mets
    • Won their fifth straight game of the season and have won each of their first four home games...Have allowed two or fewer runs in four straight games, their longest such streak since September 15 - September 18, 2024.
    • Eight of the Mets’ 10 games this season have been decided by two runs or less (5-3).
    • For the sixth time in franchise history and first time in 10 seasons, the Mets have won their first four games at home (also: 1985, 1988, 2005, 2012 and 2015).
    • The Mets have gone 7-3 or better in their first 10 games for the 14th time in franchise history...It ties their fifth-best record through the first 10 games of a season, only trailing their 9-1 record in 2018 and 8-2 record in 1972, 1985 and 2006.
    • With their shutout tonight, the Mets have pitched to a major league-leading 1.72 ERA (17 ER/89.0 IP) this season...It is the second-best mark in franchise history through the team’s first 10 games of a season, trailing only the 1968 team (1.67)...Mets pitchers have also collected 92 strikeouts this season, which is the seventh-most strikeouts through the team’s first 10 games in a season (108K in 2021, 107K in 2018, 106K in 2022, 103K in 2024, 101K in 2019 and 98K in 2017).
  • Kodai Senga
    • Earned his first win of the season after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings and striking out four batters...It is his fourth career game where he went at least 5.0 innings and didn’t allow a run (Last: 9/14/23 vs. Arizona).
  • Francisco Lindor
    • Singled in each of his first three at-bats, including a bunt single in the third...Has hit safely in six straight games and tallied his first multi-hit game of the season.
    • With his third hit of the night, a single to left in the fifth inning, Lindor has totaled 1,500 career hits...He is the 24th active player to reach the milestone...Is one of nine players to record 1,500+ hits since 2015.
  • Mark VientosReached base three times for the first time this season after recording a career-high three walks...It is the 19th time in his career he has been on base at least three times in a game.
  • Pete Alonso: Has a slash line of .364/.467/.846 with three doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and six runs over his last seven games...Has reached base safely multiple times in five of those seven games, including four multi-hit efforts.
  • Juan Soto: Hit an RBI double in the third inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead...He has now reached base safely in each of his first 10 games as a Met, a career-high season-opening streak...His 10-game streak is currently tied for the third longest season-opening on-base streak in the majors this season.
  • Tyrone Taylor: Singled home a run in the eighth inning to increase the Mets lead to 2-0...It was his first RBI of the season.
  • Ryne Stanek: Picked up his first career save as a Met.

NY Post: Mets continue pitching dominance in shutout win over Marlins. "The Mets lugged baseball’s best ERA into play and smothered it even further with a 2-0 shutout of the Marlins in front of 28,630 shivering fans at Citi Field on Monday for a fifth straight win. Kodai Senga, Danny Young, José Buttó and Ryne Stanek combined for a seven-hitter that made Marlins batters look overmatched — just like the Blue Jays often looked overmatched, as did the Marlins last week, as did the Astros in the season-opening series."

Brian Joura Mets360: "After throwing 32 pitches on Saturday, Butto was able to come in and throw two scoreless innings – something he probably wouldn’t be able to do last year in his first year as a reliever. After pitching back-to-back days, Edwin Diaz wasn’t available. Ryne Stanek pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save as a Met."

Tim Healey Newsday: Francisco Lindor reaches 1,500-hit milestone in Mets' win over Marlins. “Lindor’s latest round number offered an opportunity to wonder: Might the Hall of Fame be in his future?... How he fares in the back half — including the last seven years of his guaranteed contract with the Mets — will determine his fate.”

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets arms continue dominantstart to season in shutout victory over Marlins.  “Facing the Marlins for the second time in a week, the Mets (7-3) avoided facing ace Sandy Alcantara, with the 2022 Cy Young Award winner having been added to the paternity list earlier in the day. Valente Bellozo, a soft-tossing journeyman, took his place, proving tough to hit, but for different reasons than the fireballing Alcantara. His velocity topped out at just 91.7 MPH, but he induced weak contact with his four-seam fastball and cutter.”

David Lennon Newsday: How Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s new deal might keep Pete Alonso with Mets. “…taking the other top free agent off the board in early April — and putting a price tag on him — finally established a market value that previously was difficult to grasp a few months back. Plus just as Guerrero was always a perfect fit in Toronto as a perennial MVP candidate both homegrown and Canadian, Alonso has a similarly deep connection to the Mets.”

Today in Mets History Per Ultimatemets.com:

Born on this date:

Transactions:
New York Mets traded Chris DeWitt to the Chicago Cubs for Matt Franco on April 8, 1996.

Cleveland Indians claimed Jason Anderson of the New York Mets on waivers on April 8, 2004.

National Pastime.com:

1984

A pitch thrown by Mike Torrez, in the Mets' 3-1 victory over Houston at the Astrodome, damages Dickie Thon's face, compromising the promising 25 year-old shortstop's career. The orbital bone around the left eye is broken by the remorseful right-hander's fastball, ending the infielder's season and impacting his future as a major leaguer due to problems with depth perception as a result of the injury.

1988

Gary Carter, celebrating his 34th birthday with a 3-for-3 day including a home run, is doubled off second base after Howard Johnson lines out to right field to end the game on a bizarre play. Shortstop Juan Samuel, who had started to throw the relay from outfielder Chris James back to the mound, tags the Mets' catcher straying off the bag for the final out in the Phillies' 5-1 victory at Veterans Stadium.

2000

Blue Jay southpaw David Wells' nine-hit complete game 4-0 shutout against Texas at The Ballpark in Arlington snaps Kenny Rogers' 19-game home winning streak. 'The Gambler's' accomplishment, compiled while hurling for the Yankees, A's, Mets, and Rangers, is the third-longest in major league history.

2005

Jimmy Carter, who was not invited by the current administration to be part of the American delegation for today's funeral of Pope John Paul, attends the home opener at Turner Field. The former president and his wife Roslyn, who both stayed for the entire game, enjoy watching the Braves beat the Mets, 3-1.

2008

In the last home opener at Shea Stadium, the Mets are beaten by a pitcher who is older than their ballpark. Jamie Moyer pitches six strong innings, giving the 46 year-old the victory in the 45 year-old stadium when the Phillies rally to beat the Mets, 5-2.

Baseball Reference:

1969: Four expansion teams make their debuts. The Kansas City Royals, Seattle Pilots, Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres all win their inaugural games. At Shea Stadium, the Expos defeat the New York Mets, 11 - 10, to keep the Mets winless for openers. Pitcher Dan McGinn hits the Expos' first home run as the key hit, a three-run home run by Coco Laboy, is given up by Canadian-born Mets reliever Ron Taylor.

2008: Chase Utley ties a major league record by being hit by pitch three times in a game as the Phillies top the Mets, 5 - 2. Utley is hit by an Oliver Perez pitch in the 1st inning and is again plunked by Perez in the 4th. In the 7th, he is hit by Scott Schoeneweis to tie the record.
