BROOKLYN, N.Y. (August 16, 2023) - The Brooklyn Cyclones fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades, 7-1, on Wednesday night at Maimonides Park. Brooklyn did not register a base hit until the bottom of the sixth, when SS Jett Williams laced a 1-out single to right field. Williams’ single would be Brooklyn’s only base knock of the night.
Hudson Valley opened up the scoring right away. With runners on first and second and nobody out, 2B D’Andre Smith booted a ground ball, allowing SS Jared Serna to reach safely, and a run to come home to score.
Hudson Valley tacked on another before the top of the first concluded, when 2B Alexander Vargas roped an RBI base knock to right field.
From there, RHP Jordany Ventura settled in rather nicely. The right-hander retired nine straight, spanning from the second to fifth inning. The trouble came in the fifth though, when Ventura put the first three batters of the frame on. Then, RF Anthony Hall doubled home a pair to push the lead to 4-0, and simultaneously ending Ventura’s night.
RHP Brendan Hardy would come in to retire the side and strand the base runners. Hardy was effective in relief, tossing two hitless frames, while striking out two and walking one.
The Renegades tacked on another in the seventh, when RHP Bailey Reid committed a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. That allowed the runner on third, CF Spencer Jones, to come home to pad the Renegades lead to 5-0.
Hudson Valley continued its offensive display in the eighth. With two on and one out, Jones tattooed a double to left - his third base hit of the night - to score a pair. The two-bagger was Jones’ 27th double of the 2023 campaign, the most on Hudson Valley’s squad.
Brooklyn’s response came in the bottom of the eighth, when Smith came home to score from third on a wild pitch and break up the shutout.
Neither team scratched across runs in the ninth, as Hudson Valley held on for a 7-1 victory.
The Cyclones return to Maimonides Park Thursday evening for game three of six against the Renegades. Brooklyn sends RHP Jawilme Ramirez (1-1, 2.57 ERA) to the hill, where he’ll oppose LHP Brock Selvidge (2-0, 2.66 ERA).
