Tim Healey Newsday: In Pete Alonso's free agency, Mets offer something nobody else can. "But here is the reality, for Alonso and for the Mets. They offer him something else no other club can: a chance at a one-team legacy and the opportunity to build on his perennial All-Star resume with the club whose fans long have loved him — plus all that that entails, from the would-be-inevitable franchise home run record to maybe someday having his No. 20 retired."
Bill Madden NY Daily News: Steve Cohen hands the Mets over to Juan Soto with obscene contract. "Cohen, on the other hand, had no problem with any added perks Soto and his family threw at him, and there were plenty. Besides a suite at Citi Field for 15 years, he also threw in 22 (for Soto’s number) Delta Club premium seats, security people for both him and his entire family home and away, and it is said, but not confirmed, the “family services” clause in the contract includes charter flights for his family to road games and a clothes allowance for his mother!"
Mike Lupica NY Daily News: Steve Cohen is the big man in town with Juan Soto signing and is the owner everybody wants. "You are allowed to think it’s silly that the suite at Citi Field that Cohen threw in might have been one of the determining factors at the end, after the Yankees made it clear that they don’t do business with baseball players that way; think it silly just because of the money Cohen was already throwing in Soto’s direction. But what that showed is that Cohen, the hedge fund guy, might not have been hedging his bet on Soto, but sure was sweetening it."
SNY.TV: Mets free agency and trade buzz: New York among teams to inquire about potential Luis Castillo trade. "According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Mets, Orioles, Red Sox and Cubs have all reached out to the Mariners to at least inquire about a potential Castillo trade. Castillo went 11-12 and pitched to a 3.64 ERA, pitching for the light-hitting Mariners in 2024. The year prior, however, was a different story. The right-hander was 14-9 with a 3.34 ERA and 1.096 WHIP en route to his third All-Star selection and being fifth in Cy Young voting in 2023."
NY Post: David Ortiz made push to bring Juan Soto to Red Sox: ‘We wanted him in Boston’. "Ortiz made at least one pitch to Soto on behalf of the Red Sox last month, telling the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast, 'If he signs with this organization, which is an amazing organization, he can balance the clubhouse in a way that I did. He’s gonna have Coach Papi in his corner.'”
Bob Raissman NY Daily News: Expect Juan Soto and the Mets to be primetime players for MLB’s TV partners. "Thanks to the baseball media’s coverage of Soto’s financial machinations, there is going to be a new pool of casual fans who will be ripe for the taking and helpful in actually juicing MLB’s national TV ratings...The TV suits also will load up on the Mets because they can’t help themselves.
I want to thank Mets fans for responding to the Soto signing. Ticket sales exploded this week vs last week. We were 18 th in MLB attendance last year . Any predictions where we end up this year?

1967 | The Mets obtain Tommy Agee, the 1966 Rookie of the Year, and utility infielder Al Weis from the White Sox in exchange for Buddy Booker, Tommy Davis, Jack Fisher, and Billy Wynne. New York's newest additions will both play a pivotal role in the team's 1969 World Championship season. |
2002 | With the threat of losing their heavy-hitting second baseman, Jeff Kent, the Giants sign former All-Star free agent Edgardo Alfonzo (.308, 16, 56) to a four-year deal. The 29 year-old infielder, who was named the Mets All-time second baseman in August, was not tendered arbitration after turning down a number of contract proposals from the team. |
2004 | After offering a four-year deal worth approximately $53 million, the Mets announce the club has come to terms with Pedro Martinez (16-9, 3.90 ERA). The former Red Sox ace, who posted a 117-37 record in seven seasons with Boston, criticizes his former team for not being more aggressive in retaining his services. |
1961: The Mets continue spending, sending Lee Walls and $100,000 to the Dodgers for Charlie Neal. Neal, the 5th ex-Dodger on the roster, was downed by the measles in the spring and a knee spur later on.
1990: The Mets send veteran lefty Bob Ojeda and minor leaguer Greg Hansell to the Dodgers for OF Hubie Brooks.
2002: The Mets trade slick-fielding SS Rey Ordonez to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for two minor leaguers to be named. The Mets also throw in $4.25 million to help offset Ordonez's $6.25 million salary. Ordonez, who had called the Mets fans "stupid", departs as 3B Edgardo Alfonzo signs a four-year deal with the Giants, opening up the left side of the Mets infield. Nineteen-year-old Jose Reyes, the Mets' top prospect, is expected to have first shot at the shortstop's job.
