Mets select 3, trade 1 and lose 5 in Rule 5 Draft

 

The 2023 Rule 5 Draft is complete.  In the Major League portion, the Mets selected a highly rated pitcher from the Rangers, only to trade him to the Red Sox.  In the minor league portion, the Mets lost 5 players - including 4 pitchers while picking a low level pitcher and an outfielder.  

With the 8th selection of Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft, the Mets picked Justin Slaten of the Texas Rangers.  They then traded Justin to the Red Sox for 2023 10th round draft pick, Ryan Ammons.  Ryan has yet to appear in Pro Ball.

On the surface, the deal did not make sense.  However, when you factor in the 4 pitchers the Mets lost in the minor league portion, the move gives them an arm that won't be Rule 5 eligible for another 3 years.  Ryan was a starter at Clemson to begin the year but strained his forearm. When he returned, he pitched out of the bullpen =.  He is said to have a low 90's fastball with a slider mixed in.
